Axions have for some time been considered a plausible candidate for dark matter. They can be produced through misalignment, but it has been argued that when inflation occurs before a Peccei-Quinn transition, appreciable production can result from cosmic strings. This has been the subject of extensive simulations. But there are reasons to be skeptical about the possible role of axion strings. We review and elaborate on these questions, and argue that parametrically strings are already accounted for by the assumption of random misalignment angles. We review and elaborate on these questions, and provide several qualitative arguments that parametrically strings are already accounted for by the assumption of random misalignment angles. The arguments are base on considerations of the collective modes of the string solutions, on computations of axion radiation in particular models, and reviews of simulations.

  1. Constant Scaling Fails for Global Monopole Networks

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Global monopole networks exhibit logarithmic growth in the number-density parameter ξ rather than constant scaling, with fractional response γ ≈ 0.5 for blue-tilted initial spectra.

  2. Feebly-Interacting Peccei-Quinn Model

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A feebly-interacting PQ scalar with large wave-function renormalization can generate a large axion decay constant while keeping all mass scales near the TeV scale, predicting a light PQ Higgs and new dark matter scenarios.

  3. String Theory and Grand Unification Suggest a Sub-Microelectronvolt QCD Axion

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

String-theoretic axions consistent with grand unification and proton decay are predicted to have masses in the 3e-11 to 1e-8 eV window, with at most 47 axions in the Kreuzer-Skarke ensemble.

  4. MOSAIC: Magnonic Observations of Spin-dependent Axion-like InteraCtions

    hep-ph 2025-04 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

MOSAIC is a proposed scalable array of YIG magnon spheres coupled to electron-on-neon qubits that could search for electron-coupled axion dark matter with projected sensitivity beyond current ferromagnetic haloscopes.

  5. Coherent and Stochastic Axion Dark Matter from Thermal Relaxation

    hep-ph 2026-08 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Thermal relaxation of an axion field produces a dark matter relic whose coherent and stochastic parts share one optical depth, yielding a subthermal momentum spectrum.
