We present an analysis of the mid-infrared (MIR) and optical properties of type 1 (broad-line) quasars detected by the Spitzer Space Telescope. The MIR color-redshift relation is characterized to z=3, with predictions to z=7. We demonstrate how combining MIR and optical colors can yield even more efficient selection of active galactic nuclei (AGN) than MIR or optical colors alone. Composite spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are constructed for 259 quasars with both Sloan Digital Sky Survey and Spitzer photometry, supplemented by near-IR, GALEX, VLA and ROSAT data where available. We discuss how the spectral diversity of quasars influences the determination of bolometric luminosities and accretion rates; assuming the mean SED can lead to errors as large as a factor of 2 for individual quasars. Finally, we show that careful consideration of the shape of the mean quasar SED and its redshift dependence leads to a lower estimate of the fraction of reddened/obscured AGNs missed by optical surveys as compared to estimates derived from a single mean MIR to optical flux ratio.

  1. AGN Reverberation Mapping with LITMUS: Fundamental Limits on lag Recovery Rates

    astro-ph.CO 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A Bayesian re-analysis of 906 OzDES AGN finds that previous reverberation lags, especially for MgII and CIV, are often false positives, with only 3-28% of MgII sources showing simple lags.

  2. The COLIBRE-SKIRT pipeline: Calibration-free dust radiative transfer postprocessing for cosmological simulations

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The COLIBRE-SKIRT pipeline reproduces the observed low-redshift cosmic SED without calibrating the post-processing, using live dust from the simulation and a new 'split & scale' grain-size mapping.

  3. First detection of ultra-fast outflows in a quiescent galaxy

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

First detection of an ultra-fast outflow (v≈0.07c) in a quiescent galaxy quenched ~9 Gyr ago, suggesting AGN winds can maintain quiescence independent of global star formation.

  4. Clustering of high-redshift quasars with DESI DR2

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

DESI DR2 quasar sample yields bias b_Q(z=2.48)=3.61 that evolves as b(z)=0.230[(1+z)^2-6.565]+2.394, consistent with constant ~10^12 M_sun halo mass and weak luminosity dependence at fixed redshift.

  5. A prevalent population of normal-mass central black holes in high-redshift massive galaxies

    astro-ph.GA 2025-02 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A galaxy-based JWST search finds 13 broad-line AGNs in massive galaxies at z~3-5 with normal black hole-to-stellar mass ratios near the local value, indicating that overmassive black holes are not the only early pathway.

  6. The Twentieth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First All-Sky BOSS Spectra, eROSITA-SDSS-V Mapper Coordinated Observations, and a Preview of the Local Volume Mapper

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

DR20 releases over three million BOSS spectra (first southern-hemisphere SDSS-V optical data), 169 LVM integral-field tiles over six targets, and eighteen value-added catalogs.

  7. Understanding the Broad-line Region of Active Galactic Nuclei with Photoionization. II. Slim disks, Self-shadowing, and BLR sizes

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Slim-disk self-shadowing plus accretion-rate-dependent BLR density enhancement explains the observed offsets of high-Eddington AGNs below the canonical R-L relation.

  8. The physical mechanism for two rapid changing-look AGNs: SDSS J0225+0030 and SDSS J1723+5504

    astro-ph.GA 2026-08 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A revised ADAF-collapse model, with the transition radius estimated from optical flux changes, yields cooling timescales comparable to the observed sub-year turn-on timescales of two changing-look AGNs.

  9. Little Red Dots at z~2 in EIGER reveal a gentle decline with respect to their peak number density at z~5

    astro-ph.GA 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Five LRDs at z≈2 yield number density ≈7×10^{-6} cMpc^{-3}, confirming a decline from the z≈5 peak but gentler than prior photometric estimates.

  10. Between Degeneracy and Evolution: UV-to-optical Insights into the BH$^*$ Model in Little Red Dots

    astro-ph.GA 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Bayesian continuum fitting of 66 LRDs shows the BH* model fits ~6% best, rising to ~40% under AGN-disfavoring priors, with most objects stellar/AGN-dominated and possible evolutionary trends.

  11. Estimating the spins of supermassive black holes in distant ultraluminous quasars

    astro-ph.HE 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Using radiative-efficiency scaling relations, the authors derive mostly a>0.9 spins for 6<z<7.5 ultraluminous quasars and interpret spin-mass-redshift correlations as evidence of high-rate disk accretion.

  12. Nuclear Activity and Host Galaxy Properties of Low-Luminosity AGN Identified from VLA Observations

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

VLA radio-selected LLAGN show 84% optical, 63% X-ray, and 13% infrared detection rates, with black holes ~0.7 dex smaller, accretion rates ~4.2 dex lower, and host galaxies ~0.3 dex lower in stellar mass with ~0.5 dex...

    astro-ph.HE 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

Spins of low-mass AGN black holes decrease with mass, supporting mergers or chaotic accretion as growth mechanisms and suggesting an evolutionary sequence where spins first decrease then slowly increase.
