We explore two different problems in string theory in which duality relates an ordinary p-form in one theory to a self-dual (p+1)-form in another theory. One problem involves comparing D4-branes to M5-branes, and the other involves comparing the Ramond-Ramond forms in Type IIA and Type IIB superstring theory. In each case, a subtle topological effect involving the p-form can be recovered from a careful analysis of the quantum mechanics of the self-dual (p+1)-form.

Anomaly Matching in 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFTs from M5 Cobordism
M5 bordism classifies the invertible phases of 6d (2,0) anomaly theories, and the Hopf-Wess-Zumino term is the phase that transgresses to the second Pontryagin class.

SymTFTs and Non-Invertible Symmetries of 6d (2,0) SCFTs of Type $D$ from M-theory
The 7d SymTFT for 6d (2,0) D_N SCFTs is derived from M-theory on AdS7 × RP4, including the outer-automorphism Z2 sector, and is used to derive non-invertible symmetries and anomaly polynomials.

Anomaly-induced vanishing of brane partition functions
Anomalies imply vanishing brane partition functions; this yields unified derivations of the Freed-Witten and M5 shifted-quantization conditions and new S-fold D3-brane constraints.
