abstract

We study the well-posedness and stability of an impedance passive infinite-dimensional linear system under nonlinear feedback of the form $u(t)=\phi(v(t)-y(t))$, where $\phi$ is a monotone function. Our first main result introduces conditions guaranteeing the existence of classical and generalised solutions in a situation where the original linear system is well-posed. In the absence of the external input $v$ we establish the existence of strong and generalised solutions under strictly weaker conditions. Finally, we introduce conditions guaranteeing that the origin is a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium point of the closed-loop system. Motivated by the analysis of partial differential equations with nonlinear boundary conditions, we use our results to investigate the well-posedness and stablility of abstract boundary control systems, port-Hamiltonian systems, a Timoshenko beam model, and a two-dimensional boundary controlled heat equation.

  1. Active Disturbance Rejection for Boundary Control Systems

    math.OC 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A general active-disturbance-rejection controller is proven to exponentially stabilise and reject input disturbances for abstract boundary control systems, with explicit wave- and heat-equation designs.

  2. Dynamic Stabilisation of Boundary Control Systems

    math.OC 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Observer-based dynamic feedback is shown to stabilize abstract boundary control systems, giving polynomial decay for wave and beam models that cannot be exponentially stabilized.

  3. LQ optimal control for infinite-dimensional passive systems

    math.OC 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For passive infinite-dimensional systems, the LQ optimal cost operator is a contraction; for energy preserving systems it is the identity, with the optimal control being negative output feedback (impedance) or zero in...
