abstract

This is an introduction to the method of effective field theory. As an application, I derive the effective field theory of low energy excitations in a conductor, the Landau theory of Fermi liquids, and explain why the high-$T_c$ superconductors must be described by a different effective field theory.

Symmetry-Enforced Fermi Surfaces

cond-mat.str-el · 2025-12-03 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

A noncompact Lie group symmetry generated by U(1) fermion number and Majorana translations enforces Fermi surfaces that generically have at least two noncontractible components in d-dimensional Bravais lattices.

Symmetry-based nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics in one dimension

cond-mat.stat-mech · 2025-11-16 · unverdicted · novelty 7.0

Symmetry and conservation laws alone yield nonlinear fluctuating hydrodynamics equations whose sound and heat modes both flow to a KPZ fixed point with dynamical exponent 3/2, confirmed by simulations matching the Prahofer-Spohn function.

Reduce dimensional quantum criticality for Non-Fermi liquids

cond-mat.str-el · 2026-06-01 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

A reduced-dimension model places bosons in (d+1) dimensions and fermions in d dimensions to make perturbative RG analysis of NFL physics more tractable by taming logarithmic and higher divergences.

Plasmons in Holographic Ersatz Fermi Liquids

cond-mat.str-el · 2026-05-05 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

Holographic model of non-Fermi liquid produces damped plasmon whose plasma frequency scales according to Luttinger's theorem.

Effective Field Theories for Material Media

hep-th · 2026-07-07 · accept · novelty 4.0

Spacetime-symmetry-breaking Goldstone EFTs systematically describe bulk and localized excitations of solids, fluids, and superfluids, with new thermodynamic identifications and corrected scattering rates.

Boulder Lectures on Thermal Dynamics and Hydrodynamic EFTs

hep-th · 2026-06-01 · unverdicted · novelty 2.0

Lectures summarizing the construction of hydrodynamic EFTs through strong-to-weak symmetry breaking, with examples from spin chains to relativistic QFTs and UV/IR constraints on transport coefficients.

  • The Coherence Principle: A Falsifiable Prior for Model Selection from the Grammar of Theories astro-ph.CO · 2026-06-16 · unverdicted · none · ref 26 · internal anchor

The Coherence Principle supplies a falsifiable prior for Bayesian model selection by converting compatibility with a theory's validated grammar into prior weights via a maximum-entropy exponential controlled by one parameter.
