SL(2,Z) Action On Three-Dimensional Conformal Field Theories With Abelian Symmetry

abstract
On the space of three-dimensional conformal field theories with U(1) symmetry and a chosen coupling to a background gauge field, there is a natural action of the group $SL(2,{\bf Z})$. The generator $S$ of $SL(2,{\bf Z})$ acts by letting the background gauge field become dynamical, an operation considered recently by Kapustin and Strassler in explaining three-dimensional mirror symmetry. The other generator $T$ acts by shifting the Chern-Simons coupling of the background field. This $SL(2,{\bf Z})$ action in three dimensions is related by the AdS/CFT correspondence to $SL(2,{\bf Z})$ duality of low energy U(1) gauge fields in four dimensions.

Defect-induced symmetry breaking viewed from the AdS bulk enforces protected displacement and tilt operators in non-local boundary CFTs via Ward identities.
In AdS3 gravity with double-trace scalar boundary conditions, zero-frequency boson stars are the true ground state below the instability threshold, and hairy black holes carry higher entropy than BTZ at fixed mass and angular momentum.
Develops holographic dictionary for self-dual higher-spin theories and computes four-point AdS/CFT correlators in a higher-spin extension of self-dual Yang-Mills.
Two-loop 2- and 3-point functions of a massive 3d toy QFT with generalized conformal structure are log-finite in the deep IR, suggesting nonperturbative IR finiteness and, holographically, no cosmological singularity.
New dualities are proposed between 3d N=2 USp(2N) CS-SQCD and Abelian planar quivers, obtained via real-mass deformations of N=4 mirrors and supported by matching partition functions, indices, and operator spectra.
Ensemble averaging in holography is reframed as averaging over topological completions of a relative theory via SymTFT boundary conditions, reproducing known moments in Marolf-Maxfield and Narain models.
Euclidean AdS wormholes, including new oscillatory 'wineglass' saddles, are classified and their on-shell action competition shows when inflation beats a big crunch.
Broken higher-group and non-invertible symmetries still act on the space of couplings, and their 'family anomalies' force the infrared theory to be gapless, spontaneously broken, or interrupted by a phase transition.
The bulk-to-bulk photon propagator in Euclidean AdS is derived in axial, Coulomb and covariant gauges, with the simplest position-space form in the Fried–Yennie gauge ξ=d/(d−2).
Equips bottom-up holographic D-brane models with dynamical boundary gauge fields and shows that quasinormal mode dispersion relations in equilibrium and nonequilibrium states match hydrodynamics with dynamical U(1) symmetry.
Develops a holographic realization of approximate higher-form symmetries via massive antisymmetric tensor fields and derives dualities between boundary theories from bulk Hodge dualities, including constraints on current-current correlators for self-dual cases.
Maxwell theory on ALE spaces yields vector-valued modular boundary states whose gluing produces ordinary closed-manifold partition functions, with extensions to mixed electric-magnetic 1-form anomalies.
Derives bulk and boundary propagators and computes 3- and 4-point correlators for YM, CS and SDYM in AdS/CFT with multiple boundary conditions to relate their observables.
