abstract

We provide an easy method to obtain the kinetic energy fraction in gravitational waves, generated during a cosmological first-order phase transition, as a function of only the wall velocity and quantities that can be determined from the particle physics model at the nucleation temperature. This generalizes recent work that achieved this goal for detonations. Here we present the corresponding results for deflagrations and hybrids. Unlike for detonations, the sound speed in the symmetric phase also enters the analysis. We perform a detailed comparison between our model-independent approach and other approaches in the literature. We provide a Python code snippet to determine the kinetic energy fraction $K$ as a function of the wall velocity, the two speeds of sound and the strength parameter of the phase transition. We also assess how realistic sizable deviations in speed of sound are close to the phase transition temperature in a specific model.

  1. Non-conformal obstructions to bubble expansion

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Non-conformal equations of state introduce wall and flow obstructions that delete entire classes of bubble solutions and create 'shocked detonations', shrinking the allowed wall-velocity space and suppressing gravitat...

  2. Bubble velocities in local equilibrium from a pseudopotential

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Terminal bubble-wall velocities in local equilibrium can be found by requiring degenerate minima of a field-only pseudopotential, avoiding scalar equations of motion and profile or equation-of-state assumptions.

  3. Steady-state bubbles beyond local thermal equilibrium

    astro-ph.CO 2024-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A new matching condition that includes entropy production reveals that fast detonation bubble walls and slower deflagration walls can both be stable, with the fast solution typically winning in practice.

  4. Thermal Evolution and Hydrodynamic Filtering of Pseudoscalar Dark Matter

    hep-ph 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Hydrodynamic shock heating in a deflagration phase transition enhances the filtered dark matter abundance by factors of 4.3, 5.8, and 32 for benchmark masses of 1.78, 2.30, and 5.03 TeV.

  5. Benchmarking wall velocities in cosmological phase transitions: Fluid Ansatz and WallGo

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The fluid-Ansatz and WallGo methods agree for mild phase transitions but diverge by tens of percent for strong ones, where the semi-classical approximation itself may break down.

  6. Strong First-Order Electroweak Phase Transitions and Gravitational Waves in the Normal Two-Higgs-Doublet Model: A Comparative Study of the Four Yukawa Types and Thermal Resummation Schemes

    hep-ph 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

In the Normal 2HDM, SFOEWPTs are single-step and alignment-favoring across all four Yukawa types, yet Parwani versus Arnold–Espinosa resummation changes the viable heavy-mass range from ~1.6 TeV to ≲800 GeV and leaves...

  7. Polyakov Loops Tame Phase Transitions

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Polyakov loop contributions to the thermal effective potential soften electroweak phase transitions, disfavoring first-order transitions and suppressing gravitational-wave signals.

  8. Supercooled Phase Transitions: Why Thermal History of Hidden Sector Matters in Analysis of Pulsar Timing Array Signals

    hep-ph 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Tracking the evolving temperature ratio between hidden and visible sectors can change a supercooled hidden-sector phase transition's gravitational wave spectrum by up to four orders of magnitude, reviving it as an exp...

  9. Thermalization effects on the dynamics of growing vacuum bubbles

    hep-ph 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Bubble-wall terminal velocity depends on plasma thermalization; non-equilibrium and free-streaming regimes give slower or different walls, and stationary solutions can be bypassed by runaways.

  10. The Bubble Wall Velocity in Local Thermal Equilibrium and Energy Budget with Full Effective Potential

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

  12. Perturbative gravitational wave predictions for the real-scalar extended Standard Model

    hep-ph 2024-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

At next-to-next-to-leading order, gravitational wave predictions for the real-scalar singlet extension of the Standard Model appear to converge for typical parameters, but break down for the strongest, observable signals.
