Einstein-Klein-Gordon system via Cauchy-characteristic evolution: Computation of memory and ringdown tail
read the original abstract
Cauchy-characteristic evolution (CCE) is a powerful method for accurately extracting gravitational waves at future null infinity. In this work, we extend the previously implemented CCE system within the numerical relativity code SpECTRE by incorporating a scalar field. This allows the system to capture features of beyond-general-relativity theories. We derive scalar contributions to the equations of motion, Weyl scalar computations, Bianchi identities, and balance laws at future null infinity. Our algorithm, tested across various scenarios, accurately reveals memory effects induced by both scalar and tensor fields and captures Price's power-law tail ($u^{-l-2}$) in scalar fields at future null infinity, in contrast to the $t^{-2l-3}$ tail at future timelike infinity.

Scalar memory from compact binary coalescences
In Ricci-coupled scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the change in scalar charge during binary black hole mergers generates a scalar memory contribution that modifies the total memory signal on observable timescales.

Probing Direct Waves in Black Hole Ringdowns
Merger gravitational wave signals contain a 'direct wave' from the plunging companions, screened by the remnant's potential, with frequency near the superradiant value for high-spin remnants and SNR above 10 in GW1509...

Towards long and accurate numerical relativity waveforms of binary black holes beyond general relativity
Spectral methods plus comoving fixing-the-equations drivers yield 40+ cycle equal-mass sGB binary waveforms with phase error ≲1 rad, distinguishable from GR and merging earlier.

High-accuracy drivers to simulate black hole binaries beyond general relativity with the fixing-the-equations approach
Comoving tensor-aware driver equations in SpECTRE yield ~40-cycle sGB binary waveforms with O(1) rad phase error and eccentricity ≲10^{-3}, free of spurious spin growth.

Scalar memory from compact binary coalescences
Binary black hole mergers in Ricci-coupled scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity produce an observable scalar breathing memory signal from the merger-driven change in scalar charge, potentially matching the size of the theory's...

GW250114 reveals black hole horizon signatures
The merger signal of GW250114 contains a residual 'direct wave' component whose frequency and damping match the remnant horizon's rotation frequency and surface gravity.
