We present a comprehensive description of the population synthesis code StarTrack. The original code has been significantly modified and updated. Special emphasis is placed here on processes leading to the formation and further evolution of compact objects (white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes). Both single and binary star populations are considered. The code now incorporates detailed calculations of all mass-transfer phases, a full implementation of orbital evolution due to tides, as well as the most recent estimates of magnetic braking. This updated version of StarTrack can be used for a wide variety of problems, with relevance to many current and planned observatories, e.g., studies of X-ray binaries (Chandra, XMM-Newton), gravitational radiation sources (LIGO, LISA), and gamma-ray burst progenitors (HETE-II, Swift). The code has already been used in studies of Galactic and extra-galactic X-ray binary populations, black holes in young star clusters, Type Ia supernova progenitors, and double compact object populations. Here we describe in detail the input physics, we present the code calibration and tests, and we outline our current studies in the context of X-ray binary populations.

  1. Helium emission from Balmer-dominated shocks in Type Ia supernova remnants provides constraints to their progenitor systems

    astro-ph.SR 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Detection of helium lines in Balmer-dominated shocks of Type Ia SNRs reveals enhanced helium in some remnants and challenges shock models, enabling new constraints on progenitor environments.

  2. The Tale of a Hungry Subgiant and Its Brown Dwarf: Interior Radiative Damping Dominates the Tidal Evolution of TOI-5882

    astro-ph.SR 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Radiative damping of internal gravity waves dominates tidal evolution in TOI-5882, shortening the brown dwarf's engulfment timescale by a factor of 2-6 relative to classical models.

  3. Irregularly Sampled Time Series Interpolation for Binary Evolution Simulations Using Dynamic Time Warping

    astro-ph.SR 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Dynamic Time Warping with a shared warping path across parameters aligns binary stellar tracks for accurate interpolation while preserving physical relationships such as the Stefan-Boltzmann law.

  4. Binary Evolution Can Mimic the Pair-Instability Mass Gap in Black Hole Mergers

    astro-ph.HE 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Efficient mass transfer in binaries naturally limits the mass of the first-born black hole and produces a sharp drop above 45 solar masses that mimics the pair-instability gap.

  5. The diverse outcomes of binary white dwarf mergers and connections to Galactic LISA sources

    astro-ph.SR 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0

Mock catalogs of Milky Way white dwarf mergers are created with COSMIC and released publicly, summarizing outcomes by mass and composition while varying binary evolution uncertainties to connect with LISA sources.
