In this short talk we review basic ideas of string field theory with the emphasis on the recent developments. We show how without too much technicality one can look for analytic solutions to Witten's open string field theory. This is an expanded version of a talk given by the author over the last year at a number of occasions and notably at the conference "Selected Topics in Mathematical and Particle Physics" in honor of Prof. Jiri Niederle's 70th birthday.

  1. Deriving on-shell open string field amplitudes without using Feynman rules

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

New gauge-invariant functionals of the open string field are shown to reproduce on-shell tree-level amplitudes around known D-brane backgrounds without using Feynman rules.

  2. Numerical solution for tachyon vacuum in the Schnabl gauge

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A new level-truncation method reaches level 24 in the Schnabl gauge and shows the tachyon vacuum energy has a local minimum at level 12 before extrapolating toward the analytic value -1.

  3. On Analytical Solutions in Witten's Cubic Open String Field Theory

    hep-th 2024-12 accept novelty 3.0 of 10

A lecture-note review of analytic tachyon vacuum solutions in open string field theory, including a one-parameter family of which the b = -1 member is non-physical.
