In effective field theories it is common to identify the onset of new physics with the violation of tree-level unitarity. However, we show that this is parametrically incorrect in the case of chiral perturbation theory, and is probably theoretically incorrect in general. In the chiral theory, we explore perturbative unitarity violation as a function of the number of colors and the number of flavors, holding the scale of the "new physics" (i.e. QCD) fixed. This demonstrates that the onset of new physics is parametrically uncorrelated with tree-unitarity violation. When the latter scale is lower than that of new physics, the effective theory must heal its unitarity violation itself, which is expected because the field theory satisfies the requirements of unitarity. In the chiral theory, the self-healing results in a resonant structure with scalar quantum numbers. In the electroweak variant of this argument, the structure must have the properties of the Higgs and must couple proportional to the mass in both gauge boson and fermion scattering. A similar example can be seen in the case of general relativity coupled to multiple matter fields, where iteration of the vacuum polarization diagram restores unitarity. We present arguments that suggest the correct identification should be connected to the onset of inelasticity rather than unitarity violation. We describe how the onset of inelasticity can occur in the effective theory, although it does not appear possible to predict the onset reliably.

  1. Tachyonic gravitational dark matter production after inflation

    astro-ph.CO 2026-01 accept novelty 7.0 of 10

Tachyonic instabilities from post-inflation curvature reorganization via quadratic Gauss-Bonnet coupling produce the observed dark matter relic density across wide mass and scale ranges, backed by lattice simulations ...

  2. Precision Unitarity Calculations in Inflationary Models

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Full S-matrix unitarity calculations show the cut-off in single-field nonminimal inflation rises to about 20 M_Pl/ξ for small couplings, while multifield kinetic interactions keep the cut-off near M_Pl/ξ.

  3. EFT & Species Scale: Friends or foes?

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A detailed one-loop derivation shows that the species scale can be computed consistently with infinite convergent towers of states, resolving an apparent tension between infinite towers and effective field theory.

  4. Kaluza-Klein tower thresholds and scheme dependence of the species scale

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 6.5 of 10

Leading KK-tower local corrections to four-derivative gravity are regulator-dependent EFT matching data, while log N terms are universal within proper-time cutoffs, so species-scale definitions match only parametrically.

  5. Light scalars in light of UV/IR mixing: classicalization via synergy between Vainshtein and chameleon screenings

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Classicalizing k-essence scalars need m << Λ* and, when potentials or fermion couplings are present, a chameleon-like screening layer to keep Vainshtein screening and classicalon stability intact.
