The conditions for the development of a Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) for the Quark-gluon Plasma (QGP) flow in a peripheral heavy-ion collision is investigated. The projectile and target side particles are separated by an energetically motivated hypothetical surface, characterized with a phenomenological surface tension. In such a view, a classical potential flow approximation is considered and the onset of the KHI is studied. The growth rate of the instability is computed as function of phenomenological parameters characteristic for the QGP fluid: viscosity, surface tension and flow layer thickness.

  • In [ref] we argued that the problem here is that the computations in [ref] (which was concerned with a different application, to cosmological magnetic fields) neglected an important physical effect: the fact that these collisions involve not just large magnetic fields, but also large angular momentum densities, as predicted in [ref] , and possibly observed by the STAR collaboration [ref] .

  • It has long been predicted [ref] that peripheral heavy-ion collisions, as studied in the RHIC and LHC facilities, will generically give rise to a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) with a very large vorticity.

  • It is thought [ref] that the angular momentum transferred to the QGP in a peripheral collision can take the form either of rotation or of internal shearing; this depends on physical parameters such as the viscosity of the specific plasma being examined.
