We present the Feedback Acting on Baryons in Large-scale Environments (FABLE) suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies, groups and clusters. The simulations use the AREPO moving-mesh code with a set of physical models for galaxy formation based on the successful Illustris simulation, but with updated AGN and supernovae feedback models. This allows us to simultaneously reproduce the observed redshift evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function together with the stellar and gas mass fractions of local groups and clusters across a wide range of halo masses. Focusing on the properties of groups and clusters, we find very good agreement with a range of observed scaling relations, including the X-ray luminosity--total mass and gas mass relations as well as the total mass--temperature and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich flux--mass relations. Careful comparison of our results with scaling relations based on X-ray hydrostatic masses as opposed to weak lensing-derived masses reveals some discrepancies, which hint towards a non-negligible X-ray mass bias in observed samples. We further show that radial profiles of density, pressure and temperature of the simulated intracluster medium are in very good agreement with observations, in particular for $r > 0.3\ r_{500}$. In the innermost regions however we find too large entropy cores, which indicates that a more sophisticated modelling of the physics of AGN feedback may be required to accurately reproduce the observed populations of cool-core and non-cool-core clusters.

  1. FLAMINGO: The thermal history of the Universe from tSZ effect cross-correlations and its dependencies on cosmology and baryon physics

    astro-ph.CO 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

FLAMINGO simulations show tSZ cross-correlations scale as S8 to the power of about 3 and favor low S8=0.72 with strong feedback when compared to SDSS, BOSS, DES, and Planck data.

  2. FLAMINGO: The thermal history of the Universe from tSZ effect cross-correlations and its dependencies on cosmology and baryon physics

    astro-ph.CO 2026-05 conditional novelty 6.0

tSZ cross-correlations with large-scale structure tracers prefer low S8 and strong baryonic feedback, yielding S8 = 0.72 and low group baryon fraction in FLAMINGO simulations.

  3. ArkenstoneBH. A model for high-specific energy black hole feedback in cosmological simulations

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

ArkenstoneBH is a new subgrid model for the hot phase of black hole feedback that, in isolated galaxy tests, suppresses star formation by counteracting gas inflows from the circumgalactic medium.

  4. The galaxy ultraviolet luminosity function from $z=7$ to $15$ in the COLIBRE simulations

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

COLIBRE simulations underpredict bright-end UV galaxy luminosities by 1 to 2.5 magnitudes at z=7-15 compared with observations, with the discrepancy persisting after dust attenuation and uncertainty accounting.

  5. Environmental Quenching of High-Redshift Galaxies: Interpreting JWST Observations with Simulations

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Multiple galaxy formation simulations show that low-mass quenched galaxies at z>3 are predominantly environmentally quenched satellites, often only temporarily so, and match JWST observations.

  6. Galaxy luminosity functions from far-UV to submillimetre at $z=0$ in the COLIBRE simulations

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 conditional novelty 5.0

COLIBRE simulations with SKIRT post-processing match observed galaxy luminosity functions from FUV to submm at z=0, except underpredicting bright mid-IR galaxies.

  7. Galaxy discs regulate the growth of supermassive black holes

    astro-ph.GA 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Disc galaxies inhibit supermassive black hole growth by preserving rotational support in central gas, while mergers in ellipticals disrupt this support and enable rapid accretion.
