Using hydrodynamical simulations for a large set of high-density matter equations of state (EoSs) we systematically determine the threshold mass M_thres for prompt black-hole formation in equal-mass and asymmetric neutron star (NS) mergers. We devise the so far most direct, general and accurate method to determine the unknown maximum mass of nonrotating NSs from merger observations revealing M_thres. Considering hybrid EoSs with hadron-quark phase transition, we identify a new, observable signature of quark matter in NS mergers. Furthermore, our findings have direct applications in gravitational wave searches, kilonova interpretations and multi-messenger constraints on NS properties.

  1. Remnant properties of binary neutron star mergers undergoing prompt collapse

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Prompt-collapse neutron star merger remnants occupy a narrow, high-spin region of the mass-spin plane, and Cosmic Explorer could use tidal deformability to classify most such mergers as neutron star events out to 100-250 Mpc.

  2. Mass-Gap Neutron Stars from Vector \texorpdfstring{$f(R)$}{f(R)} Gravity Inflationary Deformations

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Using four vector f(R) gravity inflation models and nine equations of state, the TOV solver finds that the MPA1 equation of state yields neutron star maximum masses around 2.75 solar masses, inside the mass gap.
