Simultaneous blockade of a photon phonon, and magnon induced by a two-level atom
Quantum Physics · Submitted 21 Sep 2020 · 54 references
Pith's verdict: Solid theoretical scheme for simultaneous photon-phonon-magnon blockade via single-excitation resonance; the central mechanism holds, but the paper undersells a central experimental-resonance requirement.

The paper claims
This paper claims that adding one pumped two-level atom to a hybrid microwave optomechanical-magnetic cavity makes photon, phonon, and magnon blockades achievable at the same detuning, even when the optomechanical coupling is weak.
The reading
What carries the argument
The load-bearing object is the effective Hamiltonian obtained after transforming to supermodes $a_\pm = (a \pm m)/\sqrt{2}$ and applying the rotating-wave approximation under $G_m \gg \{g, g_a\}$ with $\omega_b = 2G_m$. Its central term is the three-partite interaction $-\eta(a_+^\dagger a_- b + a_+ a_-^\dagger b^\dagger)$, which lets a single $a_+$ quantum be converted into one $a_-$ quantum plus one phonon, while the atomic coupling $\eta_a(a_+^\dagger \sigma + a_+ \sigma^\dagger)$ attaches the two-level atom only to the $a_+$ mode. Blocking $a_+$ at single-excitation resonance therefore cuts off the supply of two-excitation states in all three modes.

Core claim
On the paper's own terms, the central discovery is that a three-partite interaction among a photon supermode, a magnon supermode, and a phonon, activated by a pumped two-level atom, produces simultaneous sub-Poissonian statistics for the photon, phonon, and magnon under the single-excitation resonance condition $\Delta = \beta_1 = \sqrt{\eta_a^2 + \eta^2}$. At this detuning the eigenstate $|1_-\rangle$ carries one quantum in each of the supermodes and the atom, so populating it blocks all paths to two excitations. The authors further show that the alternative blockade mechanism, unconventional destructive-interference blockade, blocks only one supermode at a time and leaves the other super-Poissonian, so it cannot serve this hybrid system. They also derive that the bare photon and magnon modes inherit the blockade whenever both supermodes are blockaded, and that the single-excitation subspace contains photon-magnon Bell states.
Load-bearing premise
The derivation of the three-partite interaction assumes $G_m$ is much larger than both the optomechanical and atom-photon couplings and that the phonon frequency can be set to exactly $2G_m$; if a real YIG-sphere cavity cannot meet $\omega_b = 2G_m$, the interaction that enables simultaneous blockade never forms.
Editorial extensions
If this is right
- No single-photon strong optomechanical coupling is required: with $g < \kappa$, the atomic coupling $\eta_a$ alone keeps $\beta_1$ above the decay rate, so the triple blockade appears in a regime existing devices can reach.
- The same detuning simultaneously blockades the supermodes and the bare photon and magnon modes, since blockade of $a_+$ and $a_-$ forces the two-excitation amplitudes $C_{g200}$, $C_{g022}$, and $C_{g111}$ to vanish together.
- Photon and magnon blockade survive a thermal phonon environment, but phonon blockade is destroyed as the thermal population grows, so all three blockades together need cryogenic mechanical cooling.
- At the single-excitation resonance the photon and magnon are left in a Bell state $(|10\rangle \pm |01\rangle)/\sqrt{2}$, giving a usable entanglement resource for hybrid quantum information processing.
Reading between the lines
- One extension the authors do not pursue: because $G_m$ is tunable through the bias magnetic field, the resonance condition $\omega_b = 2G_m$ could turn the three-mode blockade on and off in situ, making the device a switchable single-excitation source.
- The mode-selective failure of destructive-interference blockade likely generalizes: in any multi-mode system where only one mode carries the atom-induced nonlinearity, unconventional blockade will suppress two-particle events in that mode while leaving partner modes bunched.
- A quantitative next step would be to compute the fidelity and rate of the photon-magnon Bell state produced at $\Delta = \beta_1$ under realistic decay and thermal noise; the paper shows the state exists in the subspace but does not estimate generation efficiency.
Original abstract
The hybrid microwave optomechanical-magnetic system has recently emerged as a promising candidate for coherent information processing because of the ultrastrong microwave photon-magnon coupling and the longlife of the magnon and phonon. As a quantum information processing device, the realization of a single excitation holds special meaning for the hybrid system. In this paper, we introduce a single two-level atom into the optomechanical-magnetic system and show that an unconventional blockade due to destructive interference cannot offer a blockade of both the photon and magnon. Meanwhile, under the condition of single excitation resonance, the blockade of the photon, phonon, and magnon can be achieved simultaneously even in a weak optomechanical region, but the phonon blockade still requires the cryogenic temperature condition.
