abstract

We look for signals of critical behavior in the Yukawa sector. By reviewing a set of models for the fermion masses, we select those where a symmetry-breaking order parameter sits at a transition point between a disordered phase and an ordered one. Many models based on ordinary flavor symmetries are formulated in terms of small corrections to a symmetric limit, which can hardly be interpreted unambiguously as a sign of near-criticality. Different is the case of nonlinearly realized flavor symmetries when the system is always in the broken phase. By inspecting a large number of modular and CP invariant models of lepton masses, we find that most of them cluster around the fixed point $\tau= i$, where the system enjoys enhanced symmetry. Since a priori all values of the modulus $\tau$ are equally acceptable to describe the fermion spectrum, we regard this preference as a hint of near-criticality. We analyze in detail these models in the vicinity of all fixed points, showing that only one possibility provides a good description of neutrino masses and mixing angles. Near the fixed points the models exhibit a universal behavior. Mass ratios and mixing angles scale with appropriate powers of the order parameter, independently of the details of the theory, a feature reminiscent of systems belonging to the same universality class in second-order phase transitions. The observations of this work are inspired by the role near-criticality might play in solving the naturalness problem and are motivated by the fascinating possibility that most of the free parameters of the Standard Model could find a common explanation.

  1. Modular Flavor Symmetries and Fermion Mass Hierarchies

    hep-ph 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In modular flavor models, fermion mass hierarchies require the modulus to sit near the critical points i, i∞, or ω; the paper classifies the near-critical mass patterns for reducible 2⊕1 matter assignments.

  2. Flavor Symmetries and Winding Modes

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In the Z3 heterotic orbifold, the modular symmetry of the Kähler modulus is Gamma(3), and the discrete flavor symmetry Delta(27) arises from misaligned U(1) gauge symmetries that become massless at different critical points.

  3. CPon Dark Matter

    hep-ph 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A light scalar from spontaneous CP violation, the CPon, can be a viable dark matter candidate with a mass between about 10 meV and 1 MeV and a suppression scale above 10^12 GeV.

  4. Modular Symmetry with Weighton

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A systematic classification of modular weighton models at levels 3, 4 and 5, with two T' benchmark fits that reproduce quark and lepton hierarchies, each requiring one admitted cancellation.

  5. Approximate Minimal SU(5), Several Fundamental Scales, Fluctuating Lattice

    hep-ph 2025-05 reject novelty 4.0 of 10

Nine physical energy scales are claimed to fall on one straight line generated by a strongly fluctuating lattice with log-normal link sizes, and the same line is used to estimate the electron and muon g-2 deviations f...
