abstract

We study $U(1)$ symmetry generators from wrapped branes in Type IIB string theory and M-theory. Specifically, we construct topological defects for the $R$-symmetry in 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ and 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ quantum field theories holographically dual to Sasaki-Einstein compactifications. These are studied using a universal consistent truncation to the gravity multiplet in the bulk theory. We furthermore check these constructions by identifying the objects charged under them, and understanding their origin in the bulk theory.

  1. Non-Abelian Symmetry Operators from Hanging Branes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

In AdS5×S5, non-Abelian SO(6) symmetry operators are realized by hanging D5-brane–KK-monopole bound states, matching the Gauss-law operators from the low-energy supergravity action.

  2. Continuous symmetries and charge measurement of boundary operators in holography

    hep-th 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Continuous symmetry operators in holography are U-shaped hanging brane bound states (D5-KK in Type IIB, M5-KK in M-theory) whose worldvolume couplings reproduce the Gauss-law symmetry operators and measure charges of ...

  3. R-symmetries, anomalies and non-invertible defects from non-BPS branes

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The U(1)_R symmetry operator of the Klebanov-Witten theory is realized by a non-BPS KK monopole, whose worldvolume action matches the SymTh operator and anomaly coefficients.

  4. On the Physics of Higher Condensation Defects

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Topological defects from higher gauging are shown, via explicit Lagrangian computations, to satisfy the Karoubi completeness condition of Johnson-Freyd's higher fusion categories, and this is identified with splitting...

  5. Linking defects via AdS/CFT holography

    hep-th 2026-07 reject novelty 5.0 of 10

A hanging D5/anti-D5 pair in a deformed AdS5 x S5 background is proposed as the topological defect that measures the U(1) charge of determinant operators.
