The pith

A machine-rendered reading of the paper's core claim, the machinery that carries it, and where it could break.

The reading

This paper attempts to show that the weak cosmic censorship conjecture is not as robust as usually assumed. Working in a rotating three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, the author considers a quantum-corrected BTZ black hole at extremality and lets a test particle with large orbital angular momentum fall into it. The claim is that, under this infall, the event horizon can be destroyed, which would violate the conjecture. The paper is careful to state that the violation depends on neglecting the particle's self-force, so the result is a potential counterexample rather than a definitive breakdown of cosmic censorship.

What carries the argument

The central mechanism is the gedanken experiment of throwing a test particle with large orbital angular momentum into an extremal qBTZ black hole. The key object is the qBTZ solution, a quantum-corrected version of the BTZ black hole, whose parameter space the paper extends. The infalling particle changes the black hole's mass and angular momentum; if the ratio crosses the extremal value, the horizon is destroyed.

What would settle it

Compute the first-order self-force correction to the particle's energy and angular momentum in the qBTZ spacetime and check whether the corrected final parameters still cross the extremality bound; if they do not, the horizon is not destroyed. The paper itself leaves this step as the open question.

Extended reading notes

Core claim

The paper argues that an extremal quantum-corrected BTZ (qBTZ) black hole can be pushed into a state with no horizon by capturing a test particle whose orbital angular momentum is large. By extending the parameter range of the qBTZ solution, the author shows that the final mass and angular momentum can cross the extremality bound, so the would-be horizon disappears. Within the test-particle approximation, this is a violation of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture; including self-force effects could prevent the overspinning.

Load-bearing premise

The load-bearing premise is that the test particle's gravitational self-force can be neglected; if back-reaction is included, the horizon may remain intact and the violation would not occur.

Editorial extensions

If this is right

  • If the claim holds, the weak cosmic censorship conjecture does not apply to qBTZ solutions in the test-particle limit.
  • The parameter range of qBTZ black holes would expand to include spacetimes that previously were considered forbidden by cosmic censorship.
  • The paper implies that the qBTZ solution should either be removed from the scope of the conjecture or be re-examined with self-force effects included.
  • The tension between quantum corrections and cosmic censorship would become a concrete, calculable issue in three-dimensional gravity.

Reading between the lines

Editorial extensions of the paper, not claims the author makes directly.

  • The same overspinning mechanism may also work for near-extremal, not only exactly extremal, qBTZ black holes, which would make the potential counterexample less fine-tuned.
  • In a holographic dual, the disappearance of the horizon might match an instability or phase transition in the boundary theory, offering a way to test the claim indirectly.
  • A full self-force calculation in this low-dimensional setting is likely tractable and would settle whether the violation is physical or an artifact of neglecting back-reaction.

Referee Report

2 major / 3 minor

Summary. The manuscript (arXiv:2508.05384) claims a potential counterexample to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (wCCC) in a rotating three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime with a quantum-corrected BTZ (qBTZ) black hole. The authors extend the qBTZ parameter range and analyze the infall of test particles with large orbital angular momentum into an extremal black hole. They report that, within the test-particle approximation and explicitly neglecting self-force effects, the event horizon can be destroyed, which they interpret as a violation of the wCCC. They conclude that qBTZ should either be excluded from the applicability of wCCC or be reexamined with self-force effects included.

Significance. If the claimed horizon destruction survives a full self-force/backreaction treatment, it would constitute a significant potential counterexample to wCCC in a quantum-corrected spacetime. The paper's explicit acknowledgment of the self-force caveat is honest, and the qBTZ setting is a concrete, tractable arena for gedanken experiments. However, as presented, the result is a necessary-condition check within a restricted approximation, not an actual wCCC violation. The gap between the title's 'Violating' and the abstract's 'potential counterexample' is substantial and should be addressed.

major comments (2)
  1. [Abstract] The central claim is explicitly conditional on neglecting self-force ('under certain conditions, such as neglecting the self-force effects'). In standard gedanken-experiment analyses, first-order test-particle absorption can overspin or overcharge a black hole while second-order self-force/backreaction restores the horizon. The manuscript must either include a self-force/backreaction estimate or clearly state that the result is only a necessary-condition check, not a wCCC violation. The title 'Violating WCC' overstates the abstract's 'potential counterexample'.
  2. [Abstract] The phrase 'extend the parameter range of the qBTZ black hole' is unspecified. It is unclear which parameter is being extended, whether the extension keeps the solution within its domain of validity, and whether this extension is responsible for the apparent horizon destruction. If the extension is performed outside the regime where qBTZ is a valid quantum-corrected solution, the conclusion may be an artifact. The authors should define the extension precisely and justify its physical relevance.
minor comments (3)
  1. [Title] The title 'Violating Weak Cosmic Censorship' is stronger than the abstract's 'potential counterexample'. Consider revising to 'A Potential Violation' or 'A Test-Particle Counterexample' to match the actual strength of the claim.
  2. [Abstract] The phrase 'under certain conditions' is vague. The abstract should state the conditions explicitly: e.g., extremal qBTZ, large orbital angular momentum above some threshold, and the specific parameter extension. It should also clarify that self-force is neglected and that this is not a full physical absorption process.
  3. [Abstract] qBTZ is not defined in the abstract. Provide a reference or a defining equation, and specify whether the analysis is based on classical test-particle geodesics or includes any first-order backreaction beyond the test-particle limit.

Circularity Check

0 steps flagged · score 0.0 of 10

No circularity found: the analysis is a conditional derivation from the qBTZ metric with an explicit test-particle caveat, not a reduction to its own inputs.

full rationale

The abstract presents a potential counterexample to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in qBTZ spacetime by extending the parameter range and examining test-particle infall. No fitted parameters, no self-citations, no uniqueness theorems, and no definitional identifications between inputs and outputs appear in the available text. The explicit caveat 'such as neglecting the self-force effects' is a limitation of physical modeling, not a circular step: the derivation apparently starts from the qBTZ metric and the test-particle geodesic approximation and derives a necessary condition for horizon destruction. Whether the approximation is adequate for the wCCC is a substantive physical question, but it is not a question of circularity. Therefore, under the hard rules requiring quoted evidence of a specific reduction, no circular step can be identified.

Assumptions & free parameters 0 free parameters · 4 assumptions · 0 invented entities

Only the abstract was available, so the ledger lists the structural assumptions implied by the abstract. No numeric free parameters or invented entities can be identified from the abstract alone.

assumptions (4)
  • domain assumption qBTZ spacetime is a valid, quantum-corrected black hole solution
The analysis is built on this metric, which is taken from prior literature; the abstract does not derive it.
  • domain assumption Test particles follow geodesics and do not perturb the background (self-force neglected)
The gedanken experiment treats infalling matter as a test particle; the abstract explicitly lists this as a condition for the result.
  • domain assumption An extremal black hole can be taken as the initial state
The gedanken experiment starts from an extremal qBTZ black hole, assuming such a state exists and can be prepared.
  • domain assumption The particle can carry arbitrarily large orbital angular momentum
The claimed horizon destruction requires large orbital angular momentum; no upper bound from quantum or other effects is mentioned in the abstract.

abstract

The weak cosmic censorship conjecture (wCCC) might not be as robust as one would expect. We present a potential counterexample to the wCCC in a rotating three-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_3$) spacetime. We extend the parameter range of the quantum corrected BTZ (qBTZ) black hole. We examine the infall of test particles with large orbital angular momentum into an extremal black hole. Our findings indicate that, under certain conditions -- such as neglecting the self-force effects -- the event horizon can be destroyed, leading to a violation of the wCCC. The results suggest that this solution should either be excluded from the applicability of the wCCC or should be examined with self-force effects incorporated.
