The next-to-leading order of the differential cross section of the subprocess of annihilation of quark-antiquark pair of prompt photon production in proton-proton collisions at NICA energies
The pith
A machine-rendered reading of the paper's core claim, the machinery that carries it, and where it could break.
Core claim
At NICA energies the next-to-leading-order contribution to the differential cross section of the subprocess q q-bar o g γ constitutes around 15% of the leading-order calculation, and the influence of longitudinal proton polarization is substantially larger for the NLO piece than for the LO piece.
What carries the argument
The reduced set of thirteen one-loop Feynman diagrams that survive after discarding heavy particles, Furry-vanishing triangles, seagulls, external-leg loops and color-violating photon-gluon transitions; their interference with the Born amplitude supplies the infrared-finite NLO correction that is then convoluted with NLO PDFs.
Load-bearing premise
That discarding hundreds of generated diagrams leaves a complete and correctly regularized set of infrared-finite NLO amplitudes that fully capture the physics at NICA kinematics.
What would settle it
A direct measurement of the double-spin asymmetry or of the NLO/LO ratio for prompt photons from quark-antiquark annihilation at NICA SPD that systematically disagrees with the 15% figure or with the predicted polarization enhancement.
Editorial analysis
A structured set of objections, weighed in public.
Referee Report
Summary. The manuscript computes the NLO QCD correction to the partonic subprocess q q-bar o g γ for prompt-photon production in unpolarized and longitudinally polarized pp collisions at NICA energies (√s ≈ 10 GeV). After generating 773 one-loop diagrams with FeynCalc and discarding heavy-particle, Furry-vanishing, seagull, external-leg and color-violating graphs, the authors retain 13 diagrams, evaluate the spin-averaged |M|^{2} in dimensional regularization (labeled “MSSM scheme”), fold with NLO PDFs, and extract differential distributions in √s, p_T, cos heta, y and x_T. They report that the NLO piece amounts to ~15 % of the LO cross section (rising to ~30 % at large p_T) and that longitudinal polarization affects the NLO contribution more strongly than the LO one. A POWHEG-BOX + PYTHIA 8.316 NLO+PS simulation is used to cross-check the shapes of the same distributions.
Significance. If the quoted 15 % NLO/LO ratio and the enhanced polarization sensitivity survive a fully documented calculation, the results would supply a useful, low-energy benchmark for the NICA SPD programme, where the limited phase space suppresses multi-particle backgrounds and thermal-photon studies are planned. The explicit listing of the retained one-loop amplitudes and the concrete POWHEG matching parameters constitute a positive step toward reproducibility. The work is incremental relative to existing NLO photon codes (JETPHOX, DIPHOX, etc.) but is the first dedicated NLO study of the annihilation channel at NICA kinematics.
major comments (4)
- [Section II, Eq. (1) and Appendix] Section II and the paragraph after Eq. (1): the reduction of 773 generated diagrams to the 13 graphs of the Appendix is asserted without intermediate Passarino–Veltman reduction, colour-factor tables or an explicit demonstration that the discarded classes leave a complete infrared-finite remainder. Because the headline 15 % NLO/LO ratio (Figs. 5–6 and Conclusions) is obtained directly from the printed |M|^{2}, any incompleteness propagates linearly into the central claim. A public notebook or supplementary file showing the reduction and the cancellation of 1/ε poles against the real-emission piece is required.
- [Section II.1] Section II.1: the renormalization scheme is repeatedly called “MSSM”. MSSM denotes the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model; the authors almost certainly mean the MS-bar scheme. The finite virtual constant that appears in |M|^{2} is never defined, nor is the precise subtraction of UV poles stated. Without a correct scheme identification the absolute normalization of the NLO piece cannot be trusted.
- [Section III, Figs. 1, 2, 5] No renormalization- or factorization-scale variation is shown for any NLO distribution or for the ratio R = σ_NLO/σ_LO. At NICA energies the scale dependence of α_s is large; the claimed 15 % correction is therefore incomplete without an uncertainty band. Standard 7-point scale variation (or at least μ_R, μ_F = p_T/2 o 2 p_T) must be added to Figs. 1, 2 and 5.
- [Section 2.3 and Fig. 4] The POWHEG + PYTHIA comparison (Sec. 2.3 and Fig. 4) is used only to illustrate shapes. The absolute NLO/LO ratio extracted from the analytic amplitudes is never confronted with the corresponding POWHEG weight. A direct numerical comparison of the integrated cross sections (or of R itself) is needed to validate the analytic |M|^{2}.
minor comments (4)
- Throughout: English grammar and spelling require thorough revision (e.g., “Next-to-the leading order”, “longitidunally”, “prodece”, “Feyn alc”, “P THI”). Many sentences are incomplete or ambiguous.
- [Figs. 1–6] Figure captions and axis labels mix roman and italic fonts inconsistently; several panels lack units or have overlapping curves that are hard to distinguish in greyscale.
- [Section 2.2] The polarized PDFs and the photon PDF inside the proton are cited, but the precise LHAPDF set identifiers and the value of the factorization scale used for the polarized case are never stated.
- [Introduction and Conclusions] References [16–18] are the authors’ own LO papers; a short comparison table quantifying how the NLO results modify those earlier LO numbers would help the reader.
Circularity Check
Minor self-citations to the authors' own prior LO papers supply only historical context; the NLO matrix element, the 15% ratio and the polarization comparisons are computed independently from new amplitudes and external PDFs.

[Introduction, paragraph beginning 'At early, we investigated...']
"At early, we investigated differential cross-section of the subprocesses Compton scattering quark-gluon, annihilation of quark-antiquark pairs and bremsstrahlung prompt photon production in proton-proton collision at NICA energies in LO approximation [16-18]. ... We investigated prompt photon production in Compton quark-gluon scattering in the NLO approximation ... [17]. In the presented article, we continued the study of prompt photon production in annihilation of quark-antiquark pair in the NLO approximation"
The citations establish continuity with the authors' own LO results but are not used to derive, constrain or replace any part of the new NLO |M|^2 or the subsequent ratios; they therefore constitute only a non-load-bearing self-reference and raise the score by at most one point.
full rationale
The central numerical claims (NLO contribution ~15% of LO; stronger polarization sensitivity of the NLO piece) are obtained by evaluating a newly derived one-loop |M|^2 (Eq. after (1), Appendix diagrams) against the LO expression, then folding both with external NLO PDFs (CT14nlo via LHAPDF, polarized sets of Ref. [24]). No parameter is fitted to data and then re-used as a prediction; the ratios R = dσ_NLO/dσ_LO and the polarized analogues are direct numerical consequences of those independent matrix elements. Self-citations [16–18] appear only in the introduction to locate the present calculation relative to the authors' earlier LO and Compton-NLO studies; they are not invoked as uniqueness theorems, as sources of the amplitudes, or as the sole justification for any load-bearing step. The POWHEG+PYTHIA comparison is an external cross-check of shapes, not a circular input. The derivation chain is therefore self-contained against external benchmarks; residual incompleteness of the diagram reduction is a correctness issue, not circularity.

Next-to-the leading order of the differential cross-section of the subprocess of annihilation of quark-antiquark pair \(q\bar{q} \rightarrow g\gamma\) of prompt photon production in nonpolarized and longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at NICA energies has been investigated. Shown, that contribution of the next-to-leading order to the differential cross-section of annihilation of quark-antiquark pair \(q\bar{q} \rightarrow g\gamma\) is significant at the high energies of colliding protons and consist around 15\% of leading order calculation. The influence of longitudinal polarization of colliding protons on the contributions of the next-to-leading order is more significant than, on the contributions of the leading order and it is significant at high energies of colliding protons. PYTHIA 8.316 \textbf{+} POWHEG BOX Monte Carlo (MC) event generator has been used for numerically simulation of prompt photon production in annihilation of quark-antiquark pair in NLO approximation for determination of the dependences of cross section on the sum of energies of colliding protons \(\sqrt{s}\), transverse momentum \(p_{T}\), cosine of scattering angle \(Cos(\theta)\), rapidity y of photon and \(x_{T}\). The NLO+PS simulation accurately reproduces the fundamental signatures of pQCD.
