Open-string theories may be related to suitable models of oriented closed strings. The resulting construction of ``open descendants'' is illustrated in a few simple cases that exhibit some of its key features.

  1. Ho\v{r}ava-Witten theory on ${\mathbf{S}}^1\vee{\mathbf{S}}^1$ as type 0 orientifold

    hep-th 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Hořava-Witten theory on S¹∨S¹ is dual to a type 0B orientifold with SO(16)^4 gauge group, explaining gauge group doubling via the geometry's junction and revealing two variants from E8 wall orientations.

  2. The Art of Branching: Cobordism Junctions of 10d String Theories

    hep-th 2026-03 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Explicit worldsheet constructions of 9d junctions joining several 10d string theories via generalized RG flow interpolations and closed tachyon condensation, providing dynamical realizations of multi-theory cobordisms.

  3. Linear and nonlinear supersymmetry in field and string theory

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Consistency criteria for constrained superfields, a gravitino energy and particle-production puzzle, the unique leading-order massive spin-2 to supergravity coupling, and a twisted Scherk-Schwarz orientifold with full...

  4. GSO projections via SPT phases

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

GSO projections in string theory are classified by fermionic SPT phases, predicting unoriented type 0 strings labeled by n mod 8 and explaining type II and type I choices.

  5. Brane annihilation in non-supersymmetric strings

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Non-supersymmetric AdS×S flux vacua in three string models decay by flux-reducing tunneling whose semi-classical rates match brane-instanton estimates from D1- or NS5-branes.

  6. Non-supersymmetric dualities beyond the gauge algebra

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Verification of Blum-Dienes and Bergman-Gaberdiel dualities shows agreement in gauge group global forms from orientifold brane states and internal lattices, with one subtle projection exception.

  7. Non-supersymmetric strings on AdS$_3$: a world-sheet perspective

    hep-th 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

On AdS3×S3×S3×S1, a Wilson-line deformation of the Spin(16)×Spin(16)⋊Z2 heterotic string produces a level-matched tachyon, so the classical moduli space contains unstable regions.

  8. O(16)$\times$O(16) heterotic theory on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The one-loop correction to the O(16)×O(16) heterotic vacuum on AdS3×S3×T4 raises the cosmological constant but never uplifts it to de Sitter for any flux integers, and the Kaluza-Klein modes of the six-dimensional fie...

  9. Phases of $\mathbf{U(N_c)}$ QCD$_3$ from Type 0 Strings and Seiberg Duality

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A brane configuration in type 0B string theory is proposed as the UV completion of U(Nc) QCD3, yielding a Seiberg dual that reproduces the bosonization and symmetry-breaking phases.

  10. Heterotic Strings on Enriques Surfaces

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Classifies shift vectors for heterotic orbifolds on Enriques surfaces, analyzes spectra, and interprets some models as non-supersymmetric 10D heterotic compactifications with tachyon projection.

  11. On Cosmologies and Vacua Driven by Tension and Curvatures

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

Classifies singularity structures and asymptotics of cosmological solutions driven by exponential string potentials and curvatures k, k' in maximally symmetric spaces, emphasizing flat slices.

  12. Dark energy from string theory: an introductory review

    hep-th 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 2.0 of 10

String theory imposes constraints on dark energy but permits various construction attempts for de Sitter vacua and single-field exponential quintessence models despite obstructions.
