Nested sampling (NS) computes parameter posterior distributions and makes Bayesian model comparison computationally feasible. Its strengths are the unsupervised navigation of complex, potentially multi-modal posteriors until a well-defined termination point. A systematic literature review of nested sampling algorithms and variants is presented. We focus on complete algorithms, including solutions to likelihood-restricted prior sampling, parallelisation, termination and diagnostics. The relation between number of live points, dimensionality and computational cost is studied for two complete algorithms. A new formulation of NS is presented, which casts the parameter space exploration as a search on a tree data structure. Previously published ways of obtaining robust error estimates and dynamic variations of the number of live points are presented as special cases of this formulation. A new online diagnostic test is presented based on previous insertion rank order work. The survey of nested sampling methods concludes with outlooks for future research.

  1. You're Gonna Need a Bigger Core: Calibrating Massive Star Models against Galactic OB-type Stars

    astro-ph.SR 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Galactic OB-star HR-diagram data imply a constant core overshoot α_ov ≈ 0.33 for 12–40 M_sun, yielding larger helium cores than standard prescriptions.

  2. An intrinsic decline of accretion activity in GRS 1915+105

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Deep X-ray, radio, and infrared non-detections of GRS 1915+105 imply an intrinsic decline in accretion activity rather than enhanced obscuration, likely driven by 2023-2024 outflows clearing the inner disc.

  3. Sampler-free gravitational wave inference using matrix multiplication

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A new algorithm computes gravitational wave posterior distributions and evidence integrals by grid evaluation with matrix multiplications, avoiding stochastic samplers and running in minutes on a single CPU.

  4. A catalogue of candidate milli-parsec separation massive black hole binaries from long term optical photometric monitoring

    astro-ph.GA 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A combined CRTS and ZTF search yields 36 candidate milli-parsec massive black hole binaries with 3-5 cycles of sinusoidal variability, and shows that 58 earlier Graham et al. candidates are likely red noise.

  5. Confidence intervals for functionals in constrained inverse problems via data-adaptive sampling-based calibration

    stat.ME 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Constraint-aware confidence intervals for ill-posed inverse problems are made computationally practical via a Berger-Boos bounding set, sampling, and quantile regression, achieving nominal coverage with shorter interv...

  6. Background-level reconstruction of scalar-field potentials from dark-energy histories and comparison with analytic potential families

    astro-ph.CO 2026-03 conditional novelty 5.5 of 10

A background reconstruction maps prescribed ρ_de(z) histories to V(φ) and ranks analytic potentials by Bayesian evidence, with exponential preferred for CPL and shifted-tanh for sign-switching targets.

  7. unimpeded: A Public Grid of Nested Sampling Chains for Cosmological Model Comparison and Tension Analysis

    astro-ph.CO 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A public library of pre-computed nested-sampling chains for 8 cosmological models and a large dataset grid enables fast Bayesian model comparison; combined analyses most often prefer ΛCDM, with DES–Planck and SH0ES–Pl...

  8. PolyStan: PolyChord nested sampling and Bayesian evidences for Stan models

    stat.CO 2025-05 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

PolyStan wraps PolyChord nested sampling for Stan models, enabling evidence computation and multimodal posterior sampling through a cmdstan-style interface.
