The mass of a black hole has traditionally been identified with its energy. We describe a new perspective on black hole thermodynamics, one that identifies the mass of a black hole with chemical enthalpy, and the cosmological constant as thermodynamic pressure. This leads to an understanding of black holes from the viewpoint of chemistry, in terms of concepts such as Van der Waals fluids, reentrant phase transitions, and triple points. Both charged and rotating black holes exhibit novel chemical-type phase behaviour, hitherto unseen.

  1. Finite-cutoff Holographic Thermodynamics

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Finite-cutoff holography yields a thermodynamic duality between T^2-deformed CFTs and Schwarzschild-AdS black holes with a Dirichlet wall, including a teardrop coexistence curve with up to three states at one temperature.

  2. Specific Heats for Rotating Quantum BTZ Black Holes in Extended Thermodynamics

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

For the rotating quantum BTZ black hole, the paper derives path-dependent heat capacities at constant pressure and volume with multiple positive and negative branches.
