abstract

Two different mechanisms exist in non-perturbative String / M- theory for enhanced SU(N) (SO(2N)) gauge symmetries. It can appear in type IIA string theory or M-theory near an $A_{N-1}$ (D_N) type singularity where membrnes wrapped around two cycles become massless, or it can appear due to coincident D-branes (and orientifold planes) where open strings stretched between D-branes become massless. In this paper we exhibit the relationship between these two mechanisms by displaying a configuration in M-theory, which, in one limit, can be regarded as membranes wrapped around two cycles with $A_{N-1}$ (D_N) type intersection matrix, and in another limit, can be regarded as open strings stretched between N Dirichlet 6-branes (in the presence of an orientifold plane).

  1. 5d Higgs Branches: Stratifications from Geometry

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Dynamical complex structure deformations of non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds with non-isolated singularities reproduce the full Higgs branch stratification of 5d SCFTs, matching magnetic quiver predictions.

  2. Remarks on the Higgs Branch of 5d Conformal Matter

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The Higgs branches of 5d conformal matter atoms and molecules are computed via magnetic quivers and class-S circle reductions, with matching dimensions across the two methods.

  3. Lost in Translation: Moduli Stabilization from EFT to Eleven Dimensions

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Explicit 11D solutions show flux stabilization of T^4/Z2 moduli in EFT does not match the full theory, with non-Lorentz-invariant deformations stabilizing a mix of volume and shape moduli instead.
