Tidal effects on compact objects provide profound theoretical insights into the structure of the field equations, and are wonderful probes of the equation of state of matter, the nature of black holes and of the underlying theory of gravity. The natural framework for understanding tides is a perturbative scheme. Here, we point out ambiguities in determining tidal response functions within such a framework, which may lead to bias in constraining physical parameters with gravitational-wave observations if the computed quantities are not properly linked to observables. We propose a Canonical Tidal Response Function (CTRF) definition to compare values of tides in theories beyond vacuum General Relativity in a unified manner. As an example, we provide black hole tidal response functions, including both conservative and dissipative pieces, in various theories of gravity. Tidal dissipation Love numbers for black holes are derived here for the first time in most of the non-Einsteinian theories considered in this paper.

    gr-qc 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

In higher-derivative gravity, the leading correction to extreme-mass-ratio inspiral waveforms and fluxes enters at 5PN order and is controlled by the ℓ=2 tidal Love number.

  2. Dynamical Tidal Response of Schwarzschild Black Holes

    gr-qc 2025-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The dynamical Love numbers of a Schwarzschild black hole are nonzero at quadratic order in frequency, run logarithmically with a coefficient set by dissipation, and are now matched including their finite, scheme-depen...

  3. One Membrane to Love them all: Tidal deformations of compact objects from the membrane paradigm

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The tidal deformability of any compact object in vacuum general relativity can be encoded in the bulk and shear viscosity of a fictitious membrane, with explicit formulas for the electric and magnetic Love numbers.

  4. Theoretical modeling of approximate universality of tidally deformed neutron stars

The paper analytically derives the universal Love relations for neutron stars and explains their equation-of-state insensitivity through a cancellation mechanism tied to low compressibility.

  5. Tidal Love Numbers of Neutron Stars in Horndeski Theories

    gr-qc 2025-01 accept novelty 7.0 of 10

In scalar-tensor theories, the 1/r^3 term used to extract neutron star tidal Love numbers contains a Love-number-independent contamination, computed here for minimally coupled and DEF scalar fields.

For a Schwarzschild black hole in a relativistic Hernquist dark matter halo, quasinormal-mode frequency shifts scale as (MDM/rs)^(3/2) rather than linearly, while tidal Love numbers are small and sensitive to the choi...
