Topological gravity is equivalent to physical gravity in two dimensions in a way that is still mysterious, though by now it has been proved by Kontsevich. In this paper it is shown that a similar relation between topological and physical Yang-Mills theory holds in two dimensions; in this case, however, the relation can be explained by a direct mapping between the two path integrals. This (1) explains many strange facts about two dimensional Yang-Mills theory, like the way the partition function can be expressed exactly as a sum over classical solutions, including unstable ones; (2) makes the corresponding topological theory completely computable.

  1. Crystals and Double Quiver Algebras from Jeffrey-Kirwan Residues

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

For quivers satisfying a no-overlap condition, flavored BPS indices are computed by crystal melting derived from Jeffrey-Kirwan residues, and new double quiver algebras are constructed whose crystal representations en...

  2. Quiver BPS Indices from Crystal Profiles

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.5 of 10

Elliptic genera and lower-dimensional BPS indices equal discrete sums over molecule boundaries in crystals defined by Jeffrey-Kirwan residues, generalizing Nekrasov Young-diagram formulas.

  3. The Runkel-Watts string

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The Runkel-Watts string is a solvable family of two-dimensional string theories whose all-genus amplitudes are generated by SU(2) Yang-Mills TQFT data combined with VMS quantum volumes, and it has a dual matrix-integr...

  4. Localisation of $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)$ theories on spindles of both twists

    hep-th 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Exact partition functions for N=(2,2) theories on spindles are computed via localisation for both twist and anti-twist, yielding a unified formula.

  5. Hyperfunctions in $A$-model Localization

    hep-th 2025-09 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

  6. Total instanton restriction via multiverse interference: Noncompact gauge theories and (-1)-form symmetries

    hep-th 2025-07 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Continuous-universe decomposition plus (-1)-form gauging eliminates every instanton in local QFTs, realized explicitly by switching 2D U(1) gauge theories to noncompact R gauge groups.

  7. Lattice defect networks in 2d Yang-Mills

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A refined lattice construction for 2d Yang-Mills realizes Wilson lines, Wilson points, theta angles, and defect networks as local n-line junctions that close under fusion.
