These introductory notes are about functional renormalization group equations and some of their applications. It is emphasised that the applicability of this method extends well beyond critical systems, it actually provides us a general purpose algorithm to solve strongly coupled quantum field theories. The renormalization group equation of F. Wegner and A. Houghton is shown to resum the loop-expansion. Another version, due to J. Polchinski, is obtained by the method of collective coordinates and can be used for the resummation of the perturbation series. The genuinely non-perturbative evolution equation is obtained in a manner reminiscent of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. Two variants of this scheme are presented where the scale which determines the order of the successive elimination of the modes is extracted from external and internal spaces. The renormalization of composite operators is discussed briefly as an alternative way to arrive at the renormalization group equation. The scaling laws and fixed points are considered from local and global points of view. Instability induced renormalization and new scaling laws are shown to occur in the symmetry broken phase of the scalar theory. The flattening of the effective potential of a compact variable is demonstrated in case of the sine-Gordon model. Finally, a manifestly gauge invariant evolution equation is given for QED.

  1. Scaling solutions for gauge invariant flow equations in dilaton quantum gravity

    hep-th 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Scaling solutions of a gauge-invariant functional flow equation support the dilaton quantum gravity fixed point, with Planck mass ~ φ² at large field and a stable negative kinetial in the infrared.

  2. Wilsonian renormalisation group and thermal field theory in the Schwinger-Keldysh closed-time-path formalism

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A one-loop Schwinger-Keldysh Wilsonian RG calculation generates a dissipative cross-coupling between time branches and predicts two reduced-space fixed points in d=4, related to the Gaussian and Wilson-Fisher fixed points.

  3. $CP$ phase structure of QCD from functional renormalization group

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

FRG study of QCD-like theories finds the CP-violating four-fermion operator becomes relevant in the chirally broken phase when the gauge coupling runs, while finite quark mass strongly suppresses infrared running of t...

  4. The inflationary mechanism in Asymptotically Safe Gravity

    gr-qc 2019-08 conditional novelty 3.0 of 10

Departure from the asymptotically safe gravity fixed point generates a plateau inflaton potential with a nearly scale-invariant spectrum, and the Starobinsky model is recovered for critical exponents θ1=θ2=2.

  5. A beginner's guide to functional methods in particle physics

    hep-ph 2025-10 accept novelty 1.0 of 10

A pedagogical review showing how Dyson-Schwinger, 3PI, and Bethe-Salpeter equations can be chained together to compute glueball masses in pure Yang-Mills theory, matching lattice QCD.
