We review searches for closed string axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) in IIB string flux compactifications. For natural values of the background fluxes and TeV scale gravitino mass, the moduli stabilisation mechanism of the LARGE Volume Scenario predicts the existence of a QCD axion candidate with intermediate scale decay constant, f_a ~ 10^9 ... 10^12 GeV, associated with the small cycles wrapped by the branes hosting the visible sector, plus a nearly massless and nearly decoupled ALP associated with the LARGE cycle. In setups where the visible sector branes are wrapping more than the minimum number of two intersecting cycles, there are more ALPs which have approximately the same decay constant and coupling to the photon as the QCD axion candidate, but which are exponentially lighter. There are exciting phenomenological opportunities to search for these axions and ALPs in the near future. For f_a ~ 10^11 ... 10^12 GeV, the QCD axion can be the dominant part of dark matter and be detected in haloscopes exploiting microwave cavities. For f_a ~ 10^9 ... 10^10 GeV, the additional ALPs could explain astrophysical anomalies and be searched for in the upcoming generation of helioscopes and light-shining-through-a-wall experiments.

  1. Searches for GeV-Scale ALPs at RHIC

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Proposes searching for GeV-scale ALPs in ultra-peripheral collisions at RHIC via γγ → a → γγ, estimating sensitivity to m_a ~2-5 GeV and g_aγγ ≳4e-4 GeV^{-1} with existing PHENIX data.

  2. Time-delayed gamma-ray signatures of heavy axions from core-collapse supernovae

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

No gamma-ray excess from four supernovae in Fermi-LAT data yields the strongest constraints yet on MeV-to-GeV heavy axions coupled to both QED and QCD.

  3. Highly Excited Electron Cyclotron for QCD Axion and Dark-Photon Detection

    hep-ph 2024-10 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Proposes resonant detection of QCD axions (0.1-2.3 meV) and dark photons (down to epsilon ~2e-16) via highly excited electron cyclotron states in an open-endcap Penning trap compatible with large cavities.

  4. Long-lived sterile neutrinos from axionlike particles at the Super Tau-Charm Facility

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

STCF can reach |V_eN|^2 values one to two orders of magnitude below current bounds for heavy neutral leptons via displaced-vertex searches from ALP decays in D-meson production.

  5. Constraining F-theory Model Building with QCD Axions

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

QCD axions constrain F-theory base threefolds to have rigid or flux-rigidified divisors, yielding typical axion masses around 10^{-9} eV and decay constants near 10^{15} GeV in allowed regions.

  6. Could an axion-like particle be hidden in $\eta_c\to\gamma\gamma$?

    hep-ph 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

The authors propose that an axion-like particle with mass about 2.98 GeV and width about 31 MeV may explain the discrepancy in eta_c to gamma gamma measurements and show it is not yet excluded.

  7. Axions and Axion-like particles: collider searches

    hep-ph 2025-08 accept

A pedagogical review of the ALP effective field theory, production and decay at colliders, indirect search strategies, and a summary of current bounds on the ALP-photon coupling.
