We construct extremal, spherically symmetric black hole solutions to 4D supergravity with charge assignments that preclude BPS-saturation. In particular, we determine the ground state energy as a function of charges and moduli. We find that the mass of the non-BPS black hole remains that of a marginal bound state of four basic constituents throughout the entire moduli space and that there is always a non-zero gap above the BPS bound.

  1. An extremal black hole with a unique ground state

    hep-th 2024-11 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Microscopic D-brane description of non-supersymmetric extremal black holes yields a unique ground state with non-zero energy, confirming absence of degeneracy.

    hep-th 2026-03 conditional novelty 5.5

In pure N=4 Poincaré supergravity, all extremal spherically symmetric attractors (constant or non-constant moduli) preserve 1/4 supersymmetry for generic charges with I4>0; non-BPS attractors cannot occur.

Numerical confirmation of the attractor mechanism and 1/4 supersymmetry preservation for generic dyonic extremal black holes in pure N=4 supergravity.
