We give a very concise review of the group field theory formalism for non-perturbative quantum gravity, a higher dimensional generalisation of matrix models. We motivate it as a simplicial and local realisation of the idea of 3rd quantization of the gravitational field, equivalently of a quantum field theory of simplicial geometry, in which also the topology of space is fully dynamical. We highlight the basic structure of the formalism, and discuss briefly various models that are being studied, some recent results and the many open issues that future research should face. Finally, we point out the connections with other approaches to quantum gravity, such as loop quantum gravity, quantum Regge calculus and dynamical triangulations, and causal sets.

  1. Collective excitations in quantum gravity condensates

    gr-qc 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Collective excitations analogous to phonons are derived in quantum gravity condensates within a group field theory model, yielding leading beyond-mean-field corrections to emergent Friedmann dynamics.

  2. An Exactly Soluble Group Field Theory

    gr-qc 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A non-interacting group field theory exactly reproduces the Husain-Kuchar model's spinfoam amplitudes and Fock space, bridging canonical and covariant quantization approaches.

  3. (2+1) Lorentzian quantum cosmology from spin-foams: opportunities and obstacles for semi-classicality

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A 2+1 Lorentzian spin-foam cosmology model with a Hessian-derived measure and a massive scalar field yields convergent partition functions, with semi-classical expectation values only in the causally regular sector an...

  4. Addendum to "Relational Hamiltonian for group field theory"

    gr-qc 2019-08 accept novelty 5.0 of 10

A relational Hamiltonian is built for group field theory actions with derivative-dependent local kinetic terms, and the earlier effective Friedmann dynamics are shown to remain unchanged.

  5. Quantum Gravity, Hydrodynamics and Emergent Cosmology: A Collection of Perspectives

    gr-qc 2024-11 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

The paper argues that an effective 'hydrodynamics on superspace' framework, realized in TGFT condensate cosmology, can unify quantum gravity and cosmology.

  6. Hilbert space formalisms for group field theory

    gr-qc 2024-12 accept novelty 3.0 of 10

A structured review of the three main Hilbert space formalisms for group field theory, with emphasis on their assumptions and conceptual connections.

  7. Induced quantum gravity from QFT vector models

    gr-qc 2025-07 unverdicted novelty 2.0 of 10

Reviews basic definitions and properties of QFT vector models for induced quantum gravity and points out directions for future research.
