abstract

We point out that the cross-section for the process $e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^- \tau^+ \tau^-$ at LEP is large enough to allow for a study of the anomalous electromagnetic couplings of the $\tau$ lepton. We show that the present bounds on the magnetic dipole moment can be improved and that competitive bounds can be obtained for the electric dipole moment using the data taken from 1992 to 1994. Finally, we briefly discuss the improvements that can be obtained at LEP II.

  1. Measurement of the $\gamma\gamma \to \tau \tau$ cross section and constraints on the anomalous magnetic moment of the $\tau$ lepton in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

    nucl-ex 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

CMS measures gamma-gamma -> tau+tau- in PbPb UPCs and constrains the tau anomalous magnetic moment to -0.039 < a_tau < 0.032 (95% CL), with a fiducial cross-section of 555+60-14 microbarns.

  2. Current and future constraints on heavy New Physics from $\tau$ weak dipole moments

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Tau weak dipole moments already rank among the leading probes of tau dipole operators and will become dominant at FCC-ee and HL-LHC.

  3. CP violation studies at Super Tau-Charm Facility

    hep-ex 2025-02 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A future Super Tau-Charm Facility is projected to test CP violation in hyperon, tau, and charm decays at 1e-4 to 1e-3 sensitivities and improve the kaon CPT mass-difference limit tenfold.
