In certain 1+1 dimensional field theoretic toy models, one can go all the way from microscopic quarks via the hadron spectrum to the properties of hot and dense baryonic matter in an essentially analytic way. This "miracle" is illustrated through case studies of two popular large N models, the Gross-Neveu and the 't Hooft model - caricatures of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and real QCD, respectively. The main emphasis will be on aspects related to spontaneous symmetry breaking (discrete or continuous chiral symmetry, translational invariance) and confinement.

  1. Functional renormalization of QCD in $1 + 1$ dimensions: four-fermion interactions from quark-gluon dynamics

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

First functional renormalization group study of two-dimensional QCD with a mass-like regulator, producing flow equations for the gauge coupling, quark mass, and a Fierz-complete set of four-fermion interactions.

  2. Phase structure of quark matter and in-medium properties of mesons from Callan-Symanzik flows

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A symmetry-restored Callan-Symanzik functional RG produces a physical phase diagram and meson spectral functions for the quark-meson model, where the unconstrained scheme fails.

  3. Spin-charge deconfinement and emergent $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ structure from a self-consistent dressing of Fierz-complete $(1+1)$d Dirac fermions

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

A self-consistent dressing of Fierz-complete (1+1)d Dirac fermions yields spin-charge deconfinement diagnosed by Wilson loops, an emergent sl(2,R) gauge field, and an order-parameter manifold promoted to AdS3 ≅ SL(2,R).
