Theories of the cosmological constant fall into two classes, those in which the vacuum energy is fixed by the fundamental theory and those in which it is adjustable in some way. For each class we discuss key challenges. The string theory landscape is an example of an adjustment mechanism. We discuss the status of this idea, and future directions.

  1. Dark Energy and Neutrino Flavor from the Weak Axion

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The dark-energy scale is predicted from neutrino masses and PMNS mixing: the weak-axion Coleman-Weinberg potential lands at 1-4 meV for current neutrino data.

  2. String Axiverse

    hep-th 2009-05 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

String theory predicts an axiverse of ultralight axions whose effects on CMB polarization, matter power spectrum, and black hole superradiance can be probed by future astrophysical experiments.

  3. Inflation in non-local hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Non-local hybrid metric-Palatini gravity generically contains ghosts, but a degenerate subclass with metric f(R) gravity plus Palatini non-local terms is ghost-free and can drive slow-roll inflation resembling Starobi...

  4. Late-time Quantum Vacuum Decay and its Cosmological Implications

    astro-ph.CO 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Phenomenological late-time vacuum-tunneling models are fit to DESI DR2, supernova, and CMB data, allowing up to 50% vacuum-energy drop for z_t < 1 and a preferred z_t ~7 model that converts ~10% dark matter while easi...

  5. Dynamical system analysis of the cosmological phases in Palatini $k$-essence gravity

    gr-qc 2025-11 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Dynamical systems analysis of a Palatini k-essence model identifies fixed points for quasi-de-Sitter epochs, scaling solutions, and quintessence phases connected by heteroclinic orbits in flat FLRW cosmology.

  6. Weinberg's theorem, phantom crossing and screening

    astro-ph.CO 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Graviton-loop-induced screening forces single-field dilaton and chameleon dark energy models to keep their equation of state near -1, making observable phantom crossing impossible in this class.

  7. Serendipitous supersymmetric solution to the strong CP problem

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 4.5 of 10

Anomaly-free discrete R-symmetries plus Kim-Nilles regeneration of the mu term force an accidental U(1)_PQ whose spontaneous breaking yields a SUSY DFSZ axion that solves strong CP.

  8. Cosmological searches for the neutrino mass scale and mass ordering

    astro-ph.CO 2019-07 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

Thesis summarizing an upper limit of 0.12 eV on the neutrino mass sum, bias calibration via CMB lensing cross-correlations, and tighter limits plus stronger normal-ordering preference in non-phantom dynamical dark ene...
