We consider type IIB theory compactified on a two-sphere in the presence of mutually nonlocal 7-branes. The BPS states associated with the gauge vectors of exceptional groups are seen to arise from open strings connecting the 7-branes, and multi-pronged open strings capable of ending on more than two 7-branes. These multi-pronged strings are built from open string junctions that arise naturally when strings cross 7-branes. The different string configurations can be multiplied as traditional open strings, and are shown to generate the structure of exceptional groups.

  1. Bordisms between 9d type IIB supergravities and commutator widths of duality groups

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Proposes a refinement of the Swampland Cobordism Conjecture for Ω1(BG) with duality bundle G, where diverging commutator width of G requires infinitely many duality defects to realize monodromies via gravitational solitons.

  2. How to Falsify String Theory at a Collider

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Detection of an isolated SU(2)_L n-plet with n≥5 would falsify known string constructions; current LHC limits exclude such states up to 400-735 GeV depending on n.

  3. Finiteness and the Emergence of Dualities

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Finiteness of quantum gravity amplitudes implies moduli spaces have at most Euclidean volume growth, which in turn implies duality groups act semisimply on charge lattices.
