We study relations between some topics in number theory and supersymmetric black holes. These relations are based on the ``attractor mechanism'' of N=2 supergravity. In IIB string compactification this mechanism singles out certain ``attractor varieties.'' We show that these attractor varieties are constructed from products of elliptic curves with complex multiplication for N=4 and N=8 compactifications. The heterotic dual theories are related to rational conformal field theories. In the case of N=4 theories U-duality inequivalent backgrounds with the same horizon area are counted by the class number of a quadratic imaginary field. The attractor varieties are defined over fields closely related to class fields of the quadratic imaginary field. We discuss some extensions to more general Calabi-Yau compactifications and explore further connections to arithmetic including connections to Kronecker's Jugendtraum and the theory of modular heights. The paper also includes a short review of the attractor mechanism. A much shorter version of the paper summarizing the main points is the companion note entitled ``Attractors and Arithmetic'' (hep-th/9807056).

  1. Ramp, Plateau, and Wormholes without Averaging, and Hyper-non-perturbative Structures in Gravity

    hep-th 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Smooth filter projection of erratic spectral data reproduces random-matrix ramp and plateau in a single chaotic system, and predicts double-exponential hyper-nonperturbative effects in holographic gravity.

  2. The Fate of Black Hole-Induced Moduli Excursions in the Presence of Scalar Potentials

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Black-hole moduli throats survive or fail according to how a potential’s force, sign, oscillations, or barrier distance behave along the GHS scalar trajectory, not by the mere presence of a mass.

  3. Classical Black Hole Probes of UV Scales

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Minimal classical BPS black holes in string compactifications track the species or KK scale in infinite-distance limits, and violations may signal inconsistent EFTs.

  4. On the classification of duality defects in $c=2$ compact boson CFTs with a discrete group orbifold

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The self-duality condition that produces duality defects in c=2 compact boson CFTs is reformulated as quadratic equations whose integer solutions can be exhaustively enumerated for almost all points in the moduli space.

  5. Attractor Flow Versus Hesse Flow in Wall-Crossing Structures

    math-ph 2026-07 accept novelty 5.0 of 10

Hesse flow and attractor flow are dual under Z-affine rotation: each becomes the dual of the other, both usable inside Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing structures.

  6. Rational points in the 6d supergravity landscape and simple current extensions

    hep-th 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Rationality of the 2d SCFT on BPS strings provides a consistency criterion that uniquely determines the elliptic genus and global gauge group in a class of 6d supergravity models without tensor multiplets.

  7. Spectral Curves with Complex Multiplication in Hermitian Matrix Models

    hep-th 2025-09 reject novelty 5.0 of 10

The claimed j(g) formula and the associated complex multiplication coupling values are incorrect: Eq. (80) does not follow from Eqs. (78) and (79).
