The pith

A machine-rendered reading of the paper's core claim, the machinery that carries it, and where it could break.

The paper aims to establish that the three-loop (next-to-next-to-leading-order) BFKL eigenvalue of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills, until now known in closed form only on two vertical lines (n=0, n=1) and the horizontal line nu=0, is an exact closed form at every odd conformal spin: a finite combination of analytically continued nested harmonic sums and rational functions evaluated at the integer-shifted arguments z+k running from the reflected endpoint -zbar to z and one step beyond. If true, this matters because it makes the eigenvalue's pole structure, uniform transcendental weight five, and additive hermitian separability explicit at generic (n,nu), and it shows the three-loop object lives in the same function class as the leading and next-to-leading orders — a structural fact, not a coincidence, once the integrand's harmonic-polylogarithm alphabet is granted. The per-spin atom tables are exact rational extractions of the three-loop integrand, regenerable on demand by a shipped command, and at nu=0 the resulting intercepts reproduce independent spectral-curve values spin by spin through n=91, including 26 out-of-sample spins. The paper also reports a proved arithmetic law on the raw coefficient data — a fresh denominator prime at every spin n=p+2 with n-2 prime — which, if it continues, rules out algebraic or globally bounded generating data for those coefficients while remaining consistent with holonomy.

Core claim

Presented is a closed form for the three-loop BFKL eigenvalue of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills at every odd conformal spin: chi2(n,nu)=1/4[F_n(z)+F_n(zbar)], with z=(|n|-1)/2+inu and F_n a finite combination of analytically continued nested harmonic sums, rational functions, and the constants {zeta2,zeta3,zeta4,zeta5,ln2,Li4(1/2),zeta2 zeta3}, evaluated on the integer-shifted ladder z+k, k=-(n-1),...,1, from the reflected endpoint -zbar to z and one step beyond. Every coefficient is an exact rational multiple of 1, pi^2, or zeta3, derived as a Mellin moment of the three-loop integrand; about 85% of coefficient slots close in an elementary basis of harmonic sums in the two ladder distances, and

What carries the argument

Two mechanisms carry the argument. The Mellin rule u^l ln^j u |-> 2(-1)^j j!/(l+1+2inu)^{j+1}, applied to the three-loop integrand, sends each monomial to a rational function of an integer-shifted point z+k, so all nu-dependence enters only through shifted harmonic-sum arguments. Exact partial fractions then reduce every dressed atom to sixteen one-variable kernels NL_{v,j}(w)=sum_{N>=1}(-1)^N S_v(N)/(N+w)^j, which close in the harmonic-sum class by first-order difference equations and a periodicity-uniqueness lemma (eleven proven, five confirmed numerically). A principal-part cancellation between rational and alternating sectors at the interior integer gap points makes the completed sums re

Load-bearing premise

The reduction to nested harmonic sums rests on the assertion that the three-loop integrand at every odd conformal spin is a harmonic polylogarithm in the three-letter alphabet {0,+1,-1}, a property verified on all spins through n=91 but not proven for all n; if a single odd-spin integrand contained the cyclotomic letter i*sqrt(x) seen at even spin, the eigenvalue would leave the claimed function class.

What would settle it

Run the shipped Mellin extractor at a spin beyond the verified range, say n=101 or n=127, and (1) check that the integrand still uses only the letters {0,+1,-1} and (2) compare the resulting nu=0 intercept with the independent numerical value from spectral-curve methods. A new letter class or an intercept mismatch beyond the numeric floor would show the closed form is not valid at every odd spin; likewise, a denominator prime greater than n-2, or a missing prime at most n-2, in any raw coefficient at such n would disprove the prime law's continuation.

Watch this falsifier — get emailed when new claim-graph text bears on it.

If this is right

  • The full analytic content of the eigenvalue — pole structure in nu, uniform transcendental weight five, additively separable hermitian form — becomes explicit at every odd spin, where previously only numeric values and a few special lines (n=0, n=1, nu=0) were known in closed form.
  • The exact per-spin atom tables supply reproducible boundary data: any independent determination of the three-loop high-energy evolution must agree spin by spin, and any new odd spin n>=3 can be regenerated on demand rather than read from a table.
  • The function class matches the leading and next-to-leading orders, so the odd-spin eigenvalue is the natural candidate for the highest-transcendentality part of the corresponding QCD eigenvalue at arbitrary odd spin.
  • If the conjectured master generating function is right, the same closed master contains the even spins as well; the even case is checked through m=6 and would require half-integer ladder shifts.
  • If the prime law continues, the exceptional coefficient grids can never be algebraic or globally bounded generating data — a hard constraint on any future all-n closed form for those seven slots.

Where Pith is reading between the lines

These are editorial extensions of the paper, not claims the author makes directly.

  • A direct check the authors leave implicit: running the regenerator at a spin well beyond 91 (say 101 or 127) and comparing its nu=0 intercept against independent spectral-curve numerics would immediately test whether the alphabet hypothesis and the prime law continue; nothing in the paper's structure prevents this.
  • The n=p+2 onset law says prime p first appears at exactly spin p+2 — the same first-appearance pattern seen in denominators of harmonic numbers H_k; if that is not a coincidence, the exceptional coefficients may be expressible through harmonic-sum-like objects whose denominator arithmetic is known, potentially closing the five-kernel gap.
  • The gauge-dependence of the kernel onsets (only Kcw3's n=19 is stable) suggests the onset staircase is a property of the chosen elementary basis rather than of the eigenvalue; a basis-independent invariant might be the rank of the exceptional layer, which the data fix at exactly one.
  • Should the odd-spin reduction extend to even spins through half-integer shifts, the eigenvalue at even n would presumably involve cyclotomic harmonic polylogarithms, matching the even-spin integrand's letter i*sqrt(x); the same spectral-curve intercept line would then provide a ready-made test.

Summary. The paper claims to give, for every odd conformal spin n, a closed form for the three-loop (NNLO) BFKL eigenvalue in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills, χ2(n,ν) = (1/4)[F_n(z)+F_n(zbar)] with z=(|n|-1)/2+iν. The holomorphic block F_n is assembled from continued nested harmonic sums and rational functions of z, evaluated on the integer-shifted ladder z+k, k=-(n-1),...,1. The per-spin atom tables are obtained by exact rational Mellin extraction from the Caron-Huot-Herranen three-loop integrand at that spin; a shipped command regenerates any odd n≥3 table. A master generating function that resums the conformal spin is formulated and conjectured to match the CHH integrands, but is explicitly not used for the per-spin tables. At ν=0 the intercepts reproduce independent Quantum Spectral Curve values through n=91, with 26 spins out of sample. Coefficients are rational combinations of 1, π^2, ζ_3; 40 of 47 coefficient slots close in an elementary basis of two ladder distances, while the residual five-kernel layer is analyzed through a holonomic recurrence and a finite denominator-prime law proved through n=91 and conjectured to continue. The central claim is presented as an exact spin-by-spin closed form, with several clearly labelled conjectures and negative results.

Significance. If the central claim is correct, this is a substantial advance: the first ν-dependent closed form at NNLO for odd conformal spin, with exact rational extraction from the CHH integrand, reproducible code, and strong out-of-sample QSC agreement at ν=0. The paper is unusually careful in separating derived results from conjectures, shipping machine-readable exact tables, and reporting negative results and gauge dependencies. The strengths include: exact rational verification of the master at finite order, bit-identical reproduction of surviving prior tables, a concrete holonomic recurrence verified on holdout, and a transparent conditional arithmetic obstruction. The main risks are two load-bearing proof gaps — the odd-spin alphabet assumption and the five numerically verified kernel closures — and the fact that independent physical validation of the full ν-dependence is confined to the ν=0 line. These make the result highly plausible but not yet fully rigorous as stated.

major comments (3)
  1. [Sec. 3.1, Sec. 2.3] The all-spin closed form rests on the statement that, for odd m, the CHH integrand is a harmonic polylogarithm of weight at most four in the level-two alphabet {0,+1,-1}. This is verified on every computed odd spin through n=91, but no proof from the parity selection of the projection is given. If a cyclotomic letter i√x appeared at some odd m, the Mellin transform would leave the nested-harmonic-sum class and Eq. (4.1) would not provide a closed form in the stated class. Please either prove the alphabet property for all odd m or state the main theorem as conditional on this finite verification.
  2. [Sec. 4.3, Table 1, App. D] Five of the sixteen kernel closures (NL_(1),3, NL_(-2),2, NL_(1,1),2, NL_(-2,1),1, NL_(1,-2),1) are marked 'verified' numerically rather than proven. These kernels are used to reduce every dressed alternating atom, so the exactness of F_n at arbitrary ν is not rigorously established. The paper's own definition of closed form in Sec. 4.1 says the one-variable identities are 'proven save for five kernels confirmed numerically.' This is a load-bearing gap. The authors should either supply proofs or explicitly reformulate the central claim as conditional on these five identities.
  3. [Sec. 8.3, Sec. 8.4] Independently of the proof gaps, the physical validation of the full ν-dependence is weak. The QSC comparison probes only the ν=0 line, and the end-to-end ν≠0 comparison of Sec. 8.3 is against a series evaluator sharing the same atom tables; the paper itself notes that common-mode truncation error cancels. Thus a systematic error in the exact Mellin extraction that happens to vanish at z=M would pass all reported checks while corrupting χ2(n,ν) away from ν=0. The single n=3 numerical curve does not constrain higher spins. I recommend either adding independent full-ν checks at several higher odd spins (e.g., direct numerical evaluation of the CHH eigenvalue representation) or stating explicitly that the ν≠0 domain is validated only internally.
minor comments (5)
  1. [Eq. (6.6)] The displayed sum for R_k(z) has no visible upper limit in Eq. (6.6); it should read −Σ_{m=k+1}^{0} 1/(z+m) for k≤0. Please clarify the notation.
  2. [Sec. 2.1 vs Sec. 3] The symbol ω is used both for the Regge trajectory in Eq. (2.1) and for the spin-generating variable in Sec. 3 and Eq. (3.5). Although Sec. 3 announces the distinction, the double use can confuse readers; a different symbol for the spin-generating variable would help.
  3. [App. E.3] The abbreviation 'dps' is used without definition; please define it as the decimal precision in mpmath (e.g., dps = decimal digits of working precision).
  4. [Table 4] The n=3 entry '1' in the denominator-max-prime column is unconventional; label it as 'unit denominator' to avoid implying that 1 is a prime.
  5. [Sec. 3.4, App. F] The phrase 'byte-identically in the same build environment' is environment-dependent and weaker than the intended invariant. Suggest replacing it with 'record-for-record identical' as the precise claim.

Circularity Check

0 steps flagged

No circularity: central per-spin result is an exact Mellin extraction of the external Caron-Huot–Herranen integrand; master function is conjectural and quarantined; independent QSC comparison at ν=0 is genuine and out-of-sample.

full rationale

The derivation chain is anchored to an external input, the Caron-Huot–Herranen three-loop integrand [13], and the per-spin atom tables are direct exact Mellin extractions of that integrand (Secs. 3.1, 3.4). The resummed master generating function is explicitly labeled conjectural: Conjecture 1 is 'not needed for the per-spin tables' and is quarantined from them. The reduction to nested harmonic sums proceeds through proven tower identities and partial-fraction algebra (Secs. 4.2–4.3, App. A), with the sixteen one-variable kernel closures justified in App. D (eleven proven, five numerically verified by independent methods), not by circular definition. The ν=0 agreement with the independent Quantum Spectral Curve values [19] is a genuine benchmark: the paper reports out-of-sample high-spin intercepts and states those rows were not used to fix the construction. The coefficient catalog is explicitly 'fitted, then verified' on holdout cells rather than presented as a first-principles prediction. The acknowledged limitations — the end-to-end series evaluator shares the same atom tables, five kernel closures are numerically verified not proven, and the QSC comparison probes only ν=0 — are validation-scope caveats stated in the paper, not circular reductions. Self-citations to the authors' reflection-identity program are background and are explicitly said not to appear verbatim in the final formula. No load-bearing step reduces to its own input by definition.

The central derivation pulls from the prior literature the CHH integrand, the harmonic-sum continuation apparatus (GLMS/Vermaseren/Blumlein), and standard diagonal/Eisenstein/Christol theorems. It adds one honest conjecture (the master, Conjecture 1, quarantined), one fitted-verified catalog, three fitted structural layers (basis, catalog constants, recurrence), and a conditional corollary (Conjecture 4). No new physical degrees of freedom are invented; the new objects are mathematical.

free parameters (3)
  • elementary catalog coefficient constants (window alpha/beta and S1/S2/S-2 family constants, e.g. the 48 in Eq. (4.9)) = fixed by exact-rational fit on n<=49; refit on n<=17 is byte-identical
Section 5.2 / Table 8: 'fitted, verified'. The all-spin forms are Conjecture 2. These constants are load-bearing for the claimed 40/47 slot closure, though verified on 56595 holdout cells.
  • holonomic recurrence operator coefficients (68 integers c_{a,b,s,t}) = unique null space fixed on 156 interior cells (M=1..13, n<=27)
Section 5.5: fitted, then annihilates the 26-cell bridge and 1710 holdout cells exactly; evidence for holonomy, not a proof.
  • elementary basis choice including the min-distance block = basis fixed by hand; dropping the min-distance block moves closing slots from 40 to 32
Section 5.2: the 40/47 and 85% figures are basis-dependent, a point the authors disclose.
axioms (6)
  • domain assumption The Caron-Huot-Herranen three-loop integrand is correct and is the single external input
Section 1.4: 'The single external input is the Caron-Huot-Herranen three-loop integrand [13]'; all per-spin tables inherit its correctness.
  • domain assumption Odd-spin CHH integrands are harmonic polylogarithms of weight at most four in the level-two alphabet {0,+1,-1}
Section 3.1: 'verified on every computed odd spin... and expected from the parity selection'; the harmonic-sum classification depends on it and is verified only finitely.
  • domain assumption The even-branch analytic continuation of nested harmonic sums ((-1)^w := +1) is the relevant continuation
Section 2.2, App. A.1; the ladder identities (Phi_q = -(S_{-q} + eta(q)), etc.) are proven relative to it.
  • ad hoc to paper All sixteen kernel closures hold (eleven proven via the periodicity-uniqueness lemma; five verified numerically to at least 40 digits)
Table 1 / App. D; the full-nu closed form depends on all sixteen closures.
  • standard math Furstenberg, Christol/globally-bounded and Eisenstein theorems apply to the diagonal and coefficient-arithmetic arguments
Section 7.2, Corollary 1; requires the cone/iterated-Laurent regularity stated in Section 5.6.
  • ad hoc to paper Conjecture 4: the prime-accumulation law continues past n=91
Corollary 1's non-algebraicity / global-boundedness conclusion is conditional on this continuation; the exceptional-sector weight grading also passes through Conjecture 1.
invented entities (2)
  • master generating function F(x;omega) over the omega-alphabet independent evidence
purpose: resums the conformal spin inside the CHH projection so that [omega^m]F = I_m(x) for every spin
Conjecture 1. Evidence: exact rational agreement through u16 at five rational omega, spins through 17, and at m=9,11,13,15,21,31; even spins through m=6. The authors quarantine it from the per-spin tables.
  • five-kernel exceptional layer (KR1, KR2, KR3, Kcw3, Kcw2) and the collapsed two-letter form independent evidence
purpose: carries the residual 7/47 coefficient slots after projection onto the elementary basis
A structural object, not a new physical degree of freedom. Evidence: finite-data holonomic recurrence (Sec. 5.5), the prime law (Thm. 1), and the exact collapse of the kernel-weighted ladder onto psi(z+1)+gamma_E and Phi(-1,2,z+1) (Sec. 6).

We present the three-loop (next-to-next-to-leading order) BFKL eigenvalue of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills at odd conformal spin n in closed form, as a finite combination of continued nested harmonic sums and rational functions of z=(|n|-1)/2 + i nu on an integer-shifted ladder. For each odd spin the atom table is extracted exactly, in rational arithmetic, from the Caron-Huot-Herranen three-loop integrand; a shipped command regenerates it for any odd n>=3, with n=1 a supplied boundary block. A resummed master generating function, conjectured to reproduce those integrands at every spin (verified through n=17 and at m=9,11,13,15,21,31), is not used for the per-spin tables. At nu=0 the intercepts reproduce the independent Quantum Spectral Curve values spin by spin through n=91. The coefficients are rational multiples of 1, pi^2 and zeta_3; in a fixed elementary basis, forty of the forty-seven slots close as harmonic sums of the two ladder distances (all-spin form conjectural). The residual five-kernel layer includes one grid obeying a holonomic recurrence; once the harmonic sums are separated the coefficient-weighted ladder collapses onto two depth-one polygamma transcendentals. We report an arithmetic obstruction: the exceptional-grid coefficients recruit a new denominator prime at each n=p+2 (n-2 prime) through the computed range, a finite law we prove and conjecture to continue; on that continuation their generating data cannot be algebraic or globally bounded. Even spins are conjecturally contained in the same master. At each odd spin the eigenvalue is the product-free case of the Kotikov-Lipatov hermitian-separable form. A companion Letter announces the result.
