The observed abundance of high-redshift galaxies and clusters contains precious information about the properties of the initial perturbations. We present a method to compute analytically the number density of objects as a function of mass and redshift for a range of physically motivated non-Gaussian models. In these models the non-Gaussianity can be dialed from zero and is assumed to be small. We compute the probability density function for the smoothed dark matter density field and we extend the Press and Schechter approach to mildly non-Gaussian density fields. The abundance of high-redshift objects can be directly related to the non-Gaussianity parameter and thus to the physical processes that generated deviations from the Gaussian behaviour. Even a skewness parameter of order 0.1 implies a dramatic change in the predicted abundance of $z\gap 1$ objects. Observations from NGST and X-ray satellites (XMM) can be used to accurately measure the amount of non-Gaussianity in the primordial density field.

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0

Nonlinear axion-U(1) inflation, simulated on a lattice and fed into N-body simulations, boosts small-scale structure and high-redshift halo counts by up to ~200% relative to standard single-field initial conditions.

  2. The dark matter halo mass function in the $\Lambda\mathrm{CDM}$ cosmology at all times and over all scales -- from planetary to galaxy cluster masses

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0

A Reed-based fitting formula for the ΛCDM halo mass function, accurate to a few percent from 10^{-6} to 10^{15.5} M_⊙ and z=0–30, obtained via nested VVV simulations plus a new subsampling reconstruction.

  3. Empirical estimates of how massive galaxies can be in {\Lambda}CDM

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 conditional novelty 6.0

Corrected empirical limits show the most massive galaxies never exceed the theoretical baryonic maximum of 0.16 times halo virial mass, keeping observations consistent with LambdaCDM at all redshifts.

  4. Empirical estimates of how massive galaxies can be in {\Lambda}CDM

    astro-ph.GA 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Empirical upper limits on galaxy stellar masses from extreme value statistics, after correcting for Eddington bias and halo mass scatter, remain below the theoretical baryonic maximum of 0.16 times halo mass at all re...
