abstract

The axion solution to the strong CP problem makes use of a global Peccei-Quinn U(1) symmetry which is susceptible to violations from quantum gravitational effects. We show how discrete gauge symmetries can protect the axion from such violations. PQ symmetry emerges as an approximate global symmetry from discrete gauge symmetries. Simple models based on Z_N symmetries with N =11,12, etc are presented realizing the DFSZ axion and the KSVZ axion. The discrete gauge anomalies are cancelled by a discrete version of the Green-Schwarz mechanism. In the supersymmetric extension our models provide a natural link between the SUSY breaking scale, the axion scale, and the SUSY-preserving \mu term.

High-Quality Axion Dark Matter without Isocurvature Problem

hep-ph · 2026-05-28 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

A discrete gauge symmetry protecting the axion induces a large effective mass during inflation via a gauge-invariant PQ-violating operator, suppressing isocurvature fluctuations and addressing both quality and isocurvature issues.

Accidental Peccei-Quinn Symmetry from Chiral Gauge Symmetry and Mirror QCD

hep-ph · 2026-04-27 · unverdicted · novelty 6.0

A chiral U(1) gauge symmetry generates an accidental Peccei-Quinn symmetry broken by mirror QCD, solving the strong CP problem without a light axion while supplying WIMP dark matter, stochastic gravitational waves, and LHC-testable colored pNGBs.

High-Quality Axion Dark Matter at Gravitational Wave Interferometers

hep-ph · 2025-09-17 · unverdicted · novelty 5.0

In gauged U(1) completions enabling high-quality axion dark matter, cosmic string loops generate a stochastic gravitational wave background with an infrared break frequency that exceeds foregrounds above 10^14 GeV breaking scales and offers a probe at interferometers.

Axion Quality in Warped Extra-Dimension

hep-ph · 2026-04-09 · unverdicted · novelty 5.0

Warped extra-dimensional Wilson-line axions can achieve high quality when non-QCD potential contributions from charged bulk fields are parametrically suppressed by geometry and brane effects.
