We review the theory and phenomenology of instantons in QCD. After a general overview, we provide a pedagogical introduction to semi-classical methods in quantum mechanics and field theory. The main part of the review summarizes our understanding of the instanton liquid in QCD and the role of instantons in generating the spectrum of light hadrons. We also discuss properties of instantons at finite temperature and the chiral phase transition. We give an overview over the importance of instantons in some other models, in particular two dimensional sigma models, electroweak theory and supersymmetric QCD.

  1. Instanton condensation and a new phase of BPS black holes

    hep-th 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Instanton condensation in the matrix model for the BPS index reveals a new instability and dominant phase for small black holes, connected to partial deconfinement.

  2. Weak Scale Triggers in the SMEFT

    hep-ph 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 6.0

No weak scale triggers exist in the SMEFT up to dimension six (and likely eight) that can solve the hierarchy problem far above the weak scale.

  3. Quark orbital angular momentum as a chiral magnetic effect

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

The calculation yields a large negative orbital angular momentum L_{u-d} from chiral magnetic effects that partially cancels the positive spin contribution and reduces total J_{u-d} to match lattice QCD.

  4. Low-energy hadronic physics in holographic $\mathrm{QCD_{3}}$ with anisotropy

    hep-th 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

In an anisotropic holographic model of 3D QCD, hadronic systems become unstable when anisotropy exceeds the confinement energy scale, with dragging terms essential for transport properties.

  5. Probing QCD instantons using jet correlation observables in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

    hep-ph 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Proposes jet correlation observables to discriminate QCD instanton processes from perturbative hard scattering in LHC pp collisions, with energy constraints derived from instanton size and separation calculations in 2...

  6. Quarkyonic Meson Matter for Finite Isospin Density

    hep-ph 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

In large-Nc QCD at finite isospin density, an intermediate regime Lambda_QCD <= mu_I <= sqrt(Nc) Lambda_QCD hosts quarkyonic meson matter consisting of a filled Fermi sea of quarks bound into mesons on the QCD scale, ...

  7. Glueballs, Constituent Gluons and Instantons

    hep-ph 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

A two-gluon constituent model with instanton-induced mass and adjoint confinement predicts a compact scalar glueball of radius ~1/3 fm and an extended tensor state, matching quenched lattice results.

  8. The color force acting on a quark in the pion and nucleon

    hep-ph 2025-11 unverdicted novelty 5.0

In the instanton liquid model, the color force on a struck quark in the pion and nucleon is derived from twist-3 operators, related to gravitational and transversity form factors, and mapped in the transverse plane wi...

  9. CP conservation in the strong interactions

    hep-ph 2024-04 unverdicted novelty 3.0

CP conservation in QCD follows from taking the infinite volume limit prior to summing over topological sectors, shown consistent with steepest-descent contours and chiral EFT.
