[Abridged] Star and planet formation are the complex outcomes of gravitational collapse and angular momentum transport mediated by protostellar and protoplanetary disks. In this review we focus on the role of gravitational instability in this process. We begin with a brief overview of the observational evidence for massive disks that might be subject to gravitational instability, and then highlight the diverse ways in which the instability manifests itself in protostellar and protoplanetary disks: the generation of spiral arms, small scale turbulence-like density fluctuations, and fragmentation of the disk itself. We present the analytic theory that describes the linear growth phase of the instability, supplemented with a survey of numerical simulations that aim to capture the non-linear evolution. We emphasize the role of thermodynamics and large scale infall in controlling the outcome of the instability. Despite apparent controversies in the literature, we show a remarkable level of agreement between analytic predictions and numerical results. We highlight open questions related to (1) the development of a turbulent cascade in thin disks, and (2) the role of mode-mode coupling in setting the maximum angular momentum transport rate in thick disks.

  1. Hot water emission during an outburst on a classical T Tauri star

    astro-ph.SR 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

V557 Mon, a classical T Tauri star, underwent a year-long EXor outburst during which transient hot water vapor emission traced an inner disk cooling from about 3000 K to 2000 K.

  2. Dynamics and detectability of long-lived non-accretion phases for massive black hole binaries in cold, thermally regulating disks

    astro-ph.HE 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Self-consistent thermal regulation in circumbinary disks permits long-lived non-accretion phases that suppress binary feeding rates toward the Eddington limit while leaving optical/near-IR detectability intact.

  3. SMA 200-400 GHz Survey for 10 faint Class II Disks in the Taurus Molecular Cloud

    astro-ph.EP 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Faint Class II disks in Taurus show the same 198-358 GHz spectral index distribution as brighter disks, suggesting they too are optically thick at submillimeter wavelengths.

  4. Distribution of Chemically-Processed Dust in a Viscously Evolving Protoplanetary Disk: Application to Crystalline Silicates in Comets

    astro-ph.EP 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In a viscously expanding disk, the relative locations of the reaction line and the stagnation line determine whether chemically processed dust is retained or exported; this can explain cometary crystalline silicates w...

  5. Preferential alignment of Class 0, Class I protostellar disks in multiple systems across nine nearby molecular clouds

    astro-ph.SR 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Disks around young stars in binary and higher-order multiple systems are preferentially aligned out to 6000 AU, implying turbulent fragmentation alone cannot explain how most multiples form.

  6. On the Eccentricity Distribution and Tidal Evolution of Transiting Brown Dwarfs

    astro-ph.EP 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Short-period (P<16 d) transiting brown dwarfs are low-eccentricity while longer-period ones are more excited; assuming a shared primordial Beta distribution, tidal evolution constrains Q_BD ≈ 10^{7.1–8.1}.

  7. Dust growth and planet formation by disc fragmentation

    astro-ph.EP 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Dust growth can reduce disc opacity enough to allow gravitational instability fragmentation at ~30 au, producing gas-giant-mass fragments rather than brown dwarfs.

  8. Extending dynamical mass measurements: probing GI as a possible origin of mm-dust spirals

    astro-ph.EP 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

    Dynamical rotation-curve fits give M_disk ≈ 0.30 M_sun for HD 97048 and ≈ 0.21 M_sun for WaOph 6, and indicate disks with mm-dust spirals have systematically lower Toomre Q.

  9. MINDS survey of silicates in T Tauri disks: Correlation between dust and gas

    astro-ph.SR 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Spectral decomposition of 26 T Tauri disks finds Mg-rich silicate dust with 5-24% crystallinity and correlations linking annealed silica to stronger CO2 emission and forsterite to stronger H2O emission.

  10. A JWST, ALMA and VLA survey of the Ophiuchus-A star-forming region: Unveiling hidden dust mass and connecting infrared outflows to their radio origins

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A multi-wavelength survey of 20 Ophiuchus protostars finds dust masses tens to hundreds of times larger than millimetre-only estimates, if the adopted dust-opacity model is correct.

  11. TOI-7154b: A Close-in Massive Brown Dwarf in an Eccentric Orbit

    astro-ph.EP 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

TOI-7154b is a 71.7 M_J brown dwarf in an 8.86-day eccentric orbit around a G star, with eccentricity and age suggesting stellar-like fragmentation origins.
