abstract

Searches for invisible Higgs decays at the Large Hadron Collider constrain dark matter Higgs-portal models, where dark matter interacts with the Standard Model fields via the Higgs boson. While these searches complement dark matter direct-detection experiments, a comparison of the two limits depends on the coupling of the Higgs boson to the nucleons forming the direct-detection nuclear target, typically parameterized in a single quantity $f_N$. We evaluate $f_N$ using recent phenomenological and lattice-QCD calculations, and include for the first time the coupling of the Higgs boson to two nucleons via pion-exchange currents. We observe a partial cancellation for Higgs-portal models that makes the two-nucleon contribution anomalously small. Our results, summarized as $f_N=0.308(18)$, show that the uncertainty of the Higgs-nucleon coupling has been vastly overestimated in the past. The improved limits highlight that state-of-the-art nuclear physics input is key to fully exploiting experimental searches.

  1. Dark Phoenix: dark matter relic from its own decay

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A transient post-freeze-out decay window for dark matter, closed by a first-order phase transition that jumps a partner mass, can reduce an overproduced thermal relic to the observed abundance.

  2. Singlet-Doublet fermion origin of dark matter, neutrino mass and inverse first-order electroweak phase transition

    hep-ph 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

New singlet and doublet fermions, a scalar singlet, and right-handed neutrinos can simultaneously explain Dirac neutrino masses, dark matter, and a two-step inverse electroweak phase transition with observable gravita...

  3. The Simplest Dark Matter Model at the Edge of Perturbativity

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

At next-to-leading order, the real scalar singlet dark matter model is viable only for masses above about 20 TeV, and the complex scalar version is excluded in its perturbative regime.

  4. From WIMP to FIMP during reheating: collider vs non-collider probes for p-wave annihilation

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

Collider experiments can strongly constrain p-wave-suppressed derivative operators and thereby limit reheating temperature, DM mass, and interaction scale needed to match observed DM abundance during reheating.
