The present notes provide an extended version of a small lecture course given at the Humboldt Universit\"at zu Berlin in the Winter Term 2022/23 (of 36 hours). The material starting in Section 5.4 was added afterwards. The aim of these notes to give an introductory overview on the analytical approaches for gradient-flow equations in Hilbert spaces, Banach spaces, and metric spaces and to show that on the first entry level these theories have a lot in common. The theories and their specific setups are illustrated by suitable examples and counterexamples.

  1. Derivation of the fourth-order DLSS equation with nonlinear mobility via chemical reactions

    math.AP 2025-10 conditional novelty 8.0 of 10

A lattice chemical reaction network converges, by energy-dissipation-principle convergence, to the generalized fourth-order DLSS equation ∂tρ = −∂xx(ρ^α ∂xx log ρ) for every α>0.

  2. From diffusion to transmission via EDP-convergence: a paradigmatic multiscale limit

    math.AP 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

EDP-convergence of Otto-type gradient structures for nonlinear diffusion yields a unique effective membrane kinetic relation that can be exponential even when the microscopic dissipation is quadratic.

  3. A Dynamical Approximation Scheme on the Stiefel manifold for Wasserstein Gradient Flows

    math.NA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A Stiefel-manifold dynamical approximation for Wasserstein gradient flows represents the evolving transport map by a moving linear subspace and controls the Wasserstein error through an adaptive background space.

  4. Spending Operators and Weak Power-Port Decompositions for Path-Dependent Entropic Lagrangians

    math-ph 2026-07 unverdicted novelty 5.5 of 10

Endpoint-calibrated spending operators and weak power-port decompositions yield a path-dependent entropic Lagrangian whose stationarity recovers thermo-diffusion structure and Cahn–Hilliard.

  5. Gradient Flow Sampler-based Distributionally Robust Optimization

    math.OC 2025-10 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Entropy-regularized Wasserstein DRO can be solved by sampling from a Gibbs worst-case distribution with gradient-flow samplers, giving new WFR/SVGD algorithms and a principled recovery of WRM.
