The theory of superfluid dark matter is characterized by self-interacting sub-eV particles that thermalize and condense to form a superfluid core in galaxies. Massive black holes at the center of galaxies, however, modify the dark matter distribution and result in a density enhancement in their vicinity known as dark matter spikes. The presence of these spikes affects the evolution of binary systems by modifying their gravitational wave emission and inducing dynamical friction effects on the orbiting bodies. In this work, we assess the role of dynamical friction for bodies moving through a superfluid core enhanced by a central massive black hole. As a first step, we compute the dynamical friction force experienced by bodies moving in a circular orbit. Then, we estimate the gravitational wave dephasing of the binary, showing that the effect of the superfluid drag force is beyond the reach of space-based experiments like LISA, contrarily to collisionless dark matter, therefore providing an opportunity to distinguish these dark matter models.

Environmental effects in extreme mass ratio inspirals: perturbations to the environment in Kerr
A perturbative calculation shows that a secondary body in Kerr spacetime creates a wake in a superradiant scalar cloud, with energy fluxes that differ from Schwarzschild predictions by tens of percent.

SFDM's phonon–baryon force maps onto BECDM's non-minimal Einstein-tensor coupling plus a small Ricci coupling, but the non-analytic kinetic term prevents full dynamical equivalence.

Damping of dynamical friction force in self-interacting ultralight dark matter and Fornax timing problem
Including a damping term in the ultralight-dark-matter Gross-Pitaevskii equations reduces dynamical friction enough to allow the Fornax globular cluster GC3 to survive to 12 Gyr for certain boson masses and initial orbits.

Vortex State of Ultralight Dark Matter and the Fornax Timing Problem

Dynamical friction in ultralight dark matter: Plummer sphere perspective
For circular orbits in ultralight dark matter, the dynamical friction on a Plummer sphere is the point-probe result multiplied by the cluster's momentum-space form factor, with deviations growing at large size-to-orbi...
