abstract

We introduce a new two-dimensional string theory defined by coupling two copies of Liouville CFT with complex central charge $c=13\pm i \lambda$ on the worldsheet. This string theory defines a novel, consistent and controllable model of two-dimensional quantum gravity. We use the exact solution of the worldsheet theory to derive stringent constraints on the analytic structure of the string amplitudes as a function of the vertex operator momenta. Together with other worldsheet constraints, this allows us to completely pin down the string amplitudes without explicitly computing the moduli space integrals. We focus on the case of the sphere four-point amplitude and torus one-point amplitude as worked examples. This is the first in a series of papers on the complex Liouville string: three subsequent papers will elucidate the holographic duality with a two-matrix integral, discuss worldsheet boundaries and non-perturbative effects, and connect the theory to de Sitter quantum gravity.

  1. Toward the Structure Constants of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Liouville Theory

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

N=2 Liouville structure constants are proposed via mirror symmetry to the SL(2)_k/U(1) supercoset, with angular-momentum-violating sectors given explicitly and tested semiclassically to leading loop order.

  2. WKB-asymptotics for multipoint Virasoro conformal blocks and applications

    hep-th 2026-03 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Multipoint Virasoro conformal blocks on the sphere are shown, at large intermediate dimensions, to reduce to elliptic theta-function asymptotics, yielding a Zamolodchikov-style recursion and practical minimal-string a...

  3. The Runkel-Watts string

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The Runkel-Watts string is a solvable family of two-dimensional string theories whose all-genus amplitudes are generated by SU(2) Yang-Mills TQFT data combined with VMS quantum volumes, and it has a dual matrix-integr...

  4. $x-y$ swap for $(2,2p+1)$ minimal string

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

An x-y swapped spectral curve is conjectured to reproduce (2,2p+1) minimal string tachyon correlators without resonance transformations; verified at low genus, with a ground-ring extension that does not match HEM.
