The presence of dark matter overdensities surrounding a black hole can influence the evolution of a binary system. The gravitational wave signals emitted by a black hole binary offer a promising means to probe the dark matter environments near a black hole. The dense region of dark matter can lead to the dephasing of gravitational waveforms, which can be detected by upcoming experiments such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). The dark matter density profile around the black hole can vary for different dark matter models. Our study specifically investigates the impact of the ultralight self-interacting scalar dark matter (SIDM) on the gravitational wave signals emitted by black hole binaries. A distinctive characteristic of SIDM surrounding a black hole, as opposed to collisionless dark matter, is the formation of a soliton core. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis to estimate the size of the soliton and the corresponding SIDM parameter space that future LISA-like gravitational wave experiments can explore.

    gr-qc 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For a Schwarzschild black hole in a relativistic Hernquist dark matter halo, quasinormal-mode frequency shifts scale as (MDM/rs)^(3/2) rather than linearly, while tidal Love numbers are small and sensitive to the choi...

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A Fisher-matrix forecast shows that the proposed deci-Hz space detector GWSat would constrain dark matter spike density and slope around intermediate-mass ratio inspirals to sub-percent accuracy, while third-generatio...

  3. Probing vector gravitational atoms with eccentric intermediate mass-ratio inspirals

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Eccentric intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals around vector gravitational atoms acquire faster decay, stronger circularization, and negative periastron precession, making the cloud visible to LISA-like detectors.

  4. On Equation of State of Dark Matter around Massive Black Holes

    gr-qc 2025-01 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Static dark matter halos around Schwarzschild black holes are viable only if the dark matter pressure is negative, under two toy equations of state and a vanishing horizon-density boundary condition.
