abstract

Null Energy Condition (NEC) requires the equation of state (EoS) of the universe $w_u$ satisfy $w_u\geq-1$, which implies, for instance in a universe with matter and dark energy dominating $w_u=w_m\Omega_m+w_{de}\Omega_{de}=w_{de}\Omega_{de}\geq-1$. In this paper we study constraints on the dark energy models from the requirement of the NEC. We will show that with $\Omega_{de}\sim0.7$, $w_{de}<-1$ at present epoch is possible. However, NEC excludes the possibility of $w_{de}<-1$ forever as happened in the Phantom model, but if $w_{de}<-1$ stays for a short period of time as predicted in the Quintom theory NEC can be satisfied. We take three examples of Quintom models of dark energy, namely the phenomenological EoS, the two-scalar-field model and the single scalar model with a modified Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) lagrangian to show how this happens.

  1. Natural Phantom Dark Energy from a $\mathbb{Z}_N$--Axion

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.5 of 10

A Z_N-symmetric multi-copy dark-QCD axion, broken by single-sector reheating, yields natural phantom-crossing dark energy with dark-pion DM in a viable parameter window.

  2. Natural Phantom Crossing from Axion-WIMP Interactions

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A Z_N-symmetric WIMP sector stores the initial axion value in its relic distribution and later generates a finite-density axion potential, producing an apparent late-time phantom crossing without ghosts.

  3. Cosmological tensions in Proca-Nuevo theory

    hep-th 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Fitting a one-parameter vector-tensor dark energy model to CMB, BAO, and supernova data reduces the Hubble tension to about 1.5–2σ, but the preference over ΛCDM is weak and disappears once full perturbations are included.

  4. Evidence for evolving dark energy from DESI DR2 BAO and Pantheon$^+$, DES-Dovekie, and Union3

    astro-ph.CO 2025-08 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

DESI DR2 BAO combined with Pantheon+, DES-Dovekie and Union3 supernovae yields 1.1-2.3 sigma preference for Quintom-B type evolving dark energy (w0 > -1, wa < 0) with phantom crossing near z ~ 0.5, but no model reache...

  5. The Quintom theory of dark energy after DESI DR2

    astro-ph.CO 2025-05 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

This review traces the history of dynamical dark energy, presents the no-go theorem against single-field crossing of w = -1, and surveys viable Quintom constructions including multi-field models and modified gravity i...
