Low-energy, near-horizon scaling limits of black holes which lead to string theory on AdS_2 x S^2 are described. Unlike the higher-dimensional cases, in the simplest approach all finite-energy excitations of AdS_2 x S^2 are suppressed. Surviving zero-energy configurations are described. These can include tree-like structures in which the AdS_2 x S^2 throat branches as the horizon is approached, as well as disconnected AdS_2 x S^2 universes. In principle, the black hole entropy counts the quantum ground states on the moduli space of such configurations. In a nonsupersymmetric context AdS_D for general D can be unstable against instanton-mediated fragmentation into disconnected universes. Several examples are given.

  1. On conformal symmetry in large-$N$ quiver mechanics

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

At large rank N, the fixed-point formula for the quiver superconformal index equals the Ω_uneq contribution to the microscopic scaling BPS index of Beaujard–Mondal–Pioline, a piece previously invisible on the Coulomb branch.

  2. Superconformal mechanics from N-extended Euler-Calogero-Moser and Calogero models

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

Center-of-mass decoupling of two-particle N-extended ECM and Calogero models yields SU(1,1|N) or Osp(N|2) superconformal mechanics that admit bosonic spin variables.

  3. The two-dimensional disordered $O(N)$ sigma model

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0

A 2D disordered O(N) sigma model at large N exhibits a low-temperature spin glass phase with finite Edwards-Anderson parameter and approximate scaling in the dynamical two-point function.

  4. Inner Horizon Saddles and a Spectral KSW Criterion

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Inner horizon saddles supply the semiclassical correction -exp(A_inner/4G) to near-extremal black-hole entropy and motivate a spectral KSW criterion for well-defined one-loop effects around complex gravitational saddles.

  5. Revisiting near-extremal and near-BPS black holes in AdS3 supergravity

    hep-th 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0

In AdS3 supergravity, the gravitational path integral at low temperatures in the near-horizon region is inequivalent to that of the BTZ background, with distinct contributions from bosonic fluctuations, Chern-Simons f...

  6. Classical Unattainability of Extremality in non-BPS D-brane Systems

    hep-th 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0

For a non-BPS four-charge D-brane system in N=8 string theory, the worldline potential has no classical zero-energy minimum, so extremality is unattainable; entropy is proposed as the logarithm of the number of isolat...

  7. Searching for emergent spacetime in spin glasses

    hep-th 2025-10 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Spectral functions of SYK, p-spin, and SU(M) Heisenberg models show exponential tails in spin-glass phases and quasiparticle families in spin-liquid phases, with a proof that exponential decay blocks detection of bulk...

  8. An extremal black hole with a unique ground state

    hep-th 2024-11 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Microscopic D-brane description of non-supersymmetric extremal black holes yields a unique ground state with non-zero energy, confirming absence of degeneracy.

  9. The extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om throat from non extremal near horizon expansions

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 5.0

String Carroll first-order data miss the RN AdS2×S2 throat; second-order (EF) or all-order radial (static) terms restore it under near-extremal scaling.

  10. Superconformal mechanics from N-extended Euler-Calogero-Moser and Calogero models

    hep-th 2026-07 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Two-particle N-extended Euler-Calogero-Moser models produce SU(1,1|N) superconformal mechanics after center-of-mass decoupling; the Calogero case yields only Osp(N|2).

  11. Universal Lichnerowicz Lifting of Near-Horizon Soft Modes

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0

The universal logarithmic temperature dependence in near-extremal black hole thermodynamics originates from the first-order lifting of Lichnerowicz tensor zero modes in a 2D maximally symmetric throat, which after nor...
