For a real massless scalar field in general relativity with a negative cosmological constant, we uncover a large class of spherically symmetric initial conditions that are close to AdS, but whose numerical evolution does not result in black hole formation. According to the AdS/CFT dictionary, these bulk solutions are dual to states of a strongly interacting boundary CFT that fail to thermalize at late times. Furthermore, as these states are not stationary, they define dynamical CFT configurations that do not equilibrate. We develop a two-timescale perturbative formalism that captures both direct and inverse cascades of energy and agrees with our fully nonlinear evolutions in the appropriate regime. We also show that this formalism admits a large class of quasi-periodic solutions. Finally, we demonstrate a striking parallel between the dynamics of AdS and the classic Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou problem.

  1. New islands of stability with double-trace deformations

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 8.0 of 10

Neumann boundary conditions in anti-de Sitter space admit non-collapsing, multi-mode scalar solutions with arbitrarily small amplitude despite a fully resonant spectrum.

  2. Nonlinear Dynamics near the Threshold of Gravitational Collapse

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Perturbation theory around flat space fails before black hole formation once peak luminosity exceeds ~10^-2 L_Planck; near criticality the spectrum flattens to 1/ω, matching the prediction from discrete self-similarity.

  3. Weakly turbulent saturation of the nonlinear scalar ergoregion instability

    gr-qc 2025-10 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Time-domain evolutions demonstrate that the nonlinear scalar ergoregion instability saturates via a weakly turbulent direct cascade transferring energy to small scales and populating higher-order azimuthal modes on th...

  4. Extremal Black Hole Weather

    gr-qc 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Near-extremal Kerr black holes admit an equilibrium spectrum of non-linearly interacting quasinormal modes with amplitudes decaying as 2^{-ell/2} ell^{-7/2}, suggesting an inverse cascade toward large-scale structure.

  5. On turbulence for spacetimes with stable trapping

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

On a fixed spacetime with stable trapping, the cubic wave equation produces a forward angular-mode cascade and growth of higher-order derivatives, behavior absent for linear waves.

  6. A superintegrable quantum field theory

    nlin.SI 2025-11 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

The quantum cubic Szegő equation exhibits integer spectra for its Hamiltonian and conserved hierarchies, indicating superintegrability beyond ordinary quantum integrability.

  7. Tails from the Bulk: Gravitational Decay in AdS$_5$

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Gravitational perturbations of Schwarzschild-AdS5 with analytic SO(3)-symmetric data decay at late times as v^{-2α/C}, with subleading oscillations periodic in log v with period C(y+).

  8. Quantum estimates for classical polynomial optimization

    math-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A quantum-variational matrix method is proposed for bounding homogeneous polynomials, with converging numerical tensor-eigenvalue estimates and a new conjectured inequality for Biasi's resonant Hamiltonians.
