We discuss the extent to which it is necessary to include higher-derivative operators in the effective field theory of general scalar-tensor theories. We explore the circumstances under which it is correct to restrict to second-order operators only, and demonstrate this using several different techniques, such as reduction of order and explicit field redefinitions. These methods are applied, in particular, to the much-studied Horndeski theories. The goal is to clarify the application of effective field theory techniques in the context of popular cosmological models, and to explicitly demonstrate how and when higher-derivative operators can be cast into lower-derivative forms suitable for numerical solution techniques.

Diffeomorphic Scalar Duality
Every local scalar EFT admits a duality to an infinite class of other scalar theories via field-dependent diffeomorphisms preserving the S-matrix, extending to gravity in Einstein-Cartan formalism.

Inflation with nondynamic distortion to leading order in slow roll
Nondynamic distortion integrated out of a 13-parameter metric-affine action sources the entire inflaton kinetic term; monomial models depend only on exponent ratio while α-attractors recover modified Starobinsky observables.

Inflation with the Gauss-Bonnet term in the Palatini formulation
In Palatini gravity the inflaton–Gauss–Bonnet coupling yields a negative Chern–Simons-like kinetic correction and similar GW modifications, with metric-like behaviour unless the kinetic term nearly flips sign.

Light scalars in light of UV/IR mixing: classicalization via synergy between Vainshtein and chameleon screenings
Classicalizing k-essence scalars need m << Λ* and, when potentials or fermion couplings are present, a chameleon-like screening layer to keep Vainshtein screening and classicalon stability intact.

Dark Energy and the Symbiosis Between Micro-physics and Cosmology (Naturally)
A review arguing that technical naturalness, powered by low-energy scale invariance and supersymmetric extra dimensions, is the most promising route to solving the cosmological constant problem.
