abstract

We construct solutions of non-uniform black strings in dimensions from $D \approx 9$ all the way up to $D = \infty$, and investigate their thermodynamics and dynamical stability. Our approach employs the large-$D$ perturbative expansion beyond the leading order, including corrections up to $1/D^4$. Combining both analytical techniques and relatively simple numerical solution of ODEs, we map out the ranges of parameters in which non-uniform black strings exist in each dimension and compute their thermodynamics and quasinormal modes with accuracy. We establish with very good precision the existence of Sorkin's critical dimension and we prove that not only the thermodynamic stability, but also the dynamic stability of the solutions changes at it.

  1. String Theory in a Pinch: Resolving the Gregory-Laflamme Singularity

    hep-th 2024-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Near-Hagedorn string solutions show that in five and six spacetime dimensions, the Gregory-Laflamme pinch halts at a stable stringy neck that slowly evaporates, avoiding a naked singularity.

  2. Phases of String Stars in the Presence of a Spatial Circle

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

String star phase diagrams on a spatial circle are computed: new d=2 solutions, a quartic-induced d=5 swallowtail, and an anomalous d=6 stability pattern.

  3. The Fate of Instability of de Sitter Black Holes at Large $D$

    hep-th 2019-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

At large D, RN-dS and GB-dS black holes evolve to stationary lumpy solutions on the instability threshold, and in the unstable region their mass localizes into spot-like or ring-like configurations.

  4. Black hole collisions, instabilities, and cosmic censorship violation at large D

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In the large-D approximation, sufficiently spinning black hole mergers form rotating bars whose Gregory-Laflamme-like pinch-off outruns gravitational spin-down for D around 8 or larger, suggesting naked singularity formation.
