In axion-Maxwell theory at the minimal axion-photon coupling, we find non-invertible 0- and 1-form global symmetries arising from the naive shift and center symmetries. Since the Gauss law is anomalous, there is no conserved, gauge-invariant, and quantized electric charge. Rather, using half higher gauging, we find a non-invertible Gauss law associated with a non-invertible 1-form global symmetry, which is related to the Page charge. These symmetries act invertibly on the axion field and Wilson line, but non-invertibly on the monopoles and axion strings, leading to selection rules related to the Witten effect. We also derive various crossing relations between the defects. The non-invertible 0- and 1-form global symmetries mix with other invertible symmetries in a way reminiscent of a higher-group symmetry. Using this non-invertible higher symmetry structure, we derive universal inequalities on the energy scales where different infrared symmetries emerge in any renormalization group flow to the axion-Maxwell theory. Finally, we discuss implications for the Weak Gravity Conjecture and the Completeness Hypothesis in quantum gravity.

  1. Algebraic locality and non-invertible Gauss laws

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Non-invertible Gauss laws on lattices preserve Haag duality exactly only on cuspless regions; cusped regions require a collar, and group double models satisfy disjoint additivity.

  2. Generalized Families of QFTs

    hep-th 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Generalized family anomalies for broken higher-group and non-invertible symmetries constrain RG flows and IR phases of QFT families, with explicit application to deformed 4d QCD.

  3. Non-Local Conserved Currents and Continuous Non-Invertible Symmetries

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Non-local conserved currents attached to topological lines generate continuous non-invertible symmetries in 1+1d CFTs, with new examples in SU(2)_k WZW and minimal model products.

  4. Non-invertible symmetries in the axiverse, and the imaginary wormholes

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Imaginary wormholes and the IDB imply that towers of BPS EFT instantons generate infinitely many superpotential terms that break non-invertible axion shift symmetries in N=1 axiverse models.

  5. Continuous symmetries and charge measurement of boundary operators in holography

    hep-th 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Continuous symmetry operators in holography are U-shaped hanging brane bound states (D5-KK in Type IIB, M5-KK in M-theory) whose worldvolume couplings reproduce the Gauss-law symmetry operators and measure charges of ...

  6. Anomaly-induced vanishing of brane partition functions

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Anomalies imply vanishing brane partition functions; this yields unified derivations of the Freed-Witten and M5 shifted-quantization conditions and new S-fold D3-brane constraints.

  7. SymTFT for Continuous Symmetries: Non-linear Realizations and Spontaneous Breaking

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Continuous-symmetry SymTFTs are extended to non-linear coset realizations and to spontaneous breaking using boundary and corner constructions, recovering CCWZ actions and SSB Ward identities.

  8. Phenomenology of Fractionally Charged Particles: Two Reps Are Better Than One

    hep-ph 2025-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

Adding a second fractionally charged particle can weaken existing LHC bounds on the heavy partner by factors of a few while boosting production of the light partner by up to three orders of magnitude, motivating new i...
